Comparing LEGO Harry Potter 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople and 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake

LEGO Harry Potter 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake is the second brick-built version of the Triwizard Tournament’s watery task – so how do the two compare?

Much of the mechanics are the same between 2005’s 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople and 2023’s 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake. Krum can be switched out to have a shark head. in both, Harry still has gills and flippers, and Ron and Hermione are suspended as if floating in the water in each set. Nonetheless, there are of course some key differences that show this is a new take on the old idea.

Differences between LEGO Harry Potter 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople and 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake

Most notably, 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake includes settings both in and out of the area, featuring the dive platform where the champions begin their second task of the Tournament. In 4762 only includes underwater scenes, featuring Harry and Krum swimming down to rescue a sleeping Ron and Hermione.

Joining them under the surface of the Black Lake in both sets are the merpeople. In the Harry Potter films, merpeople are not the beautiful blonde creatures from fairytales and both sets do a decent job of showing their more horrific features. Still, 76420 triumphs again over 4762, with an updated merperson design that includes curled hair, as if it was wafting in the water, and a curled tail, to give the appearance of swimming.

Similarly, there are more details on all the minifigures: from the tips of Harry’s more refined flippers to Ron and Hermione’s less alarming sleeping faces. An important addition when it comes to Harry’s modesty is that he’s now wearing shorts, instead of what looks like the tiniest pair of Speedos in history in the earlier set.

However, the shark head from 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople is, in some ways, less goofy than its counterpart in 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake. The latter has an almost comicbook-style grin, taking away from the scary appearance that Krum takes on in the movie.

Looking overall at the design of the two sets, 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake ultimately has a more modern feel, with a wider variety of colours and elements that provide a more detailed display. With roughly double the piece count, the designers simply had more room to play with in 76420, as well as more advanced techniques and more elements to choose from. The price tag has similarly jumped, rising from £14.99 for 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople to £39.99 for 76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake – but that’s surely only to be expected for a larger, more modern set.

76420 Triwizard Tournament: The Black Lake is one of six new LEGO Harry Potter sets due for release in March, 2023. Here’s a look at the key details for the upcoming wave.
