A LEGO Star Wars goldmine is back on the table for 2027

Cloud City is back on the menu for LEGO Star Wars in 2027, and there are few locations in a galaxy far, far away as valuable as this one.

Strip away the endless Slave I renditions and the LEGO Group has technically only visited Cloud City four times since the Star Wars theme began in 1999 – despite it being central to some of the most iconic scenes in the entire saga, and arguably the most iconic scene in cinematic history (‘I am your father’). As a result, those sets are now incredibly valuable on the aftermarket.

With Cloud City slated to return in 2027 between two sets – 75480 Bespin Duel and the newly-rumoured 75494 Cloud City – here’s a look back at every LEGO Star Wars set that’s tackled this location to date, and how much they’ve risen in value since retiring.

10123 Cloud City

Renowned as one of the most valuable LEGO Star Wars sets of all time, the current average asking price for a new and sealed copy of 10123 Cloud City on BrickLink is an eye-watering £9,540.64. Given this set retailed for £69.99 on release in 2003, that represents a 13,531% increase in value over the past 23 years.

What makes this set so rare and valuable? Good question, because two decades on it’s not exactly much to look at. Contributing to its scarcity, however, are two essential factors: its relatively limited availability in the early days of LEGO Star Wars, and its roster of exclusive minifigures, including Boba Fett with printed arms and legs and the first-ever Lando Calrissian.

This was the first time the LEGO Group broached Cloud City and across just 698 pieces it manages to encompass almost every major scene, from the carbon-freezing chamber to the duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It even includes a landing pad for the Slave I around the back (although the ship itself was sold separately). And for 15 years, this was basically as good as it got for Bespin.

75137 Carbon-Freezing Chamber

For reasons known only to the LEGO Star Wars team, it took another 13 years before the theme revisited Cloud City in 2016’s 75137 Carbon-Freezing Chamber. This 231-piece model retailed for only £19.99 in the UK and remains the only widely-accessible playset hooked to the third act of The Empire Strikes Back. It’s also the most affordable to this day: a new copy will set you back £54.79 (on average) at BrickLink right now.

That’s still a 174% increase in value, which isn’t too shabby, and is presumably aided by its unique Han Solo and Ugnaught minifigures. This one was also ripe for doubling up to create a full chamber.

75222 Betrayal at Cloud City

Two years later, the LEGO Group returned to Bespin in full force with 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City, a sprawling 2,812-piece Master Builder Series set that sought to capture this location with the same breadth and depth as 75159 Death Star. This one was a disc rather than a sphere, though – and despite being heavily anticipated, didn’t seem to resonate with the community as expected.

Whether due to its odd shape (which makes it difficult to display) or its play-focused design, that mixed reception ultimately saw this one leave shelves only a year or so after it first arrived. That limited window of availability has resulted in real scarcity on the aftermarket, and you know what that means… yep, it’s super expensive now.

Originally retailing for £299.99, 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City will now cost you £848.50 on the aftermarket (based on the average BrickLink price for a new and sealed copy). That’s a 183% increase in value, and so it goes that this set – and its roster of unique minifigures – has followed the time-honoured tradition of a LEGO Cloud City set jumping in price post-retirement.

75294 Bespin Duel

75294 Bespin Duel was originally intended to be exclusive to Star Wars Celebration in 2020, but once the pandemic put paid to in-person gatherings, the LEGO Group released it to stores in the US. That was still a very limited window of availability, though, within a single region for only a few months – so like its predecessors, this 295-piece set is much more valuable today than it was at retail.

If you were lucky enough to find it on a store shelf in 2020 you’ll have paid $39.99 (plus tax). If you want it today, you’ll need to cough up an average of £150.13 for a sealed copy. Fortunately, the rumoured 75480 Bespin Duel will hopefully give us another shot at this scene for a more reasonable price.

That January 2027 set is said to include 718 pieces and retail for $79.99 in the US. 75494 Cloud City, meanwhile, is believed to be launching in April 2027 – though with no price tag or piece count rumoured yet, it’s tough to say how expansive it could be. Something a little smaller and more affordable than 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City would be very welcome.

Whatever those sets end up looking like, it’ll be interesting to see how they’re received, how long they stay on shelves and – ultimately – how much they rise in value on the aftermarket. Cloud City has proven very valuable for LEGO Star Wars collectors so far, after all…
