LEGO One Piece special to 'ease new viewers' into series

LEGO One Piece's animated special has received a new trailer, as the showrunner reveals why the feature film was produced in the first place.

Netflix has also shared some insight behind the production of the special from showrunner, writer, and executive producer Tom Hyndman, as well as revealing the teams behind the special.

“We wanted to make something that would ease new viewers into the massive world of One Piece while also giving longtime fans a new, fun perspective to see the iconic stories of the first two seasons,” says Hyndman. 

The main cast of the live-action One Piece adaptation reprise their roles in the special, and the showrunner goes on to describe how that impacted production.

“It was incredible to have them on board,” Hyndman states. “It allowed us to really go wild during the records because we didn’t have to take extra time to have them find the character – they are the character. This freedom led to some extremely fun and funny improvised moments that really added to the episodes.”

The casting for the special includes Inaki Godoy as Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Zoro, Jacob Romero as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, and Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper. There will be two episodes of LEGO One Piece, covering the first and second seasons of the live-action show.

The project is produced through a partnership between the LEGO Group, Japanese publisher Shueisha, and Vancouver-based animation studio Atomic Cartoons. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda is also an executive producer.

You can watch the two-part special from September 29 on Netflix. A new wave of LEGO One Piece sets will be released on August 1, including 75646 Garp’s Marine Battleship.
