Last month, we reported on a mysterious LEGO Vespa that appeared in the background of another set’s product listing. 40518 High-Speed Train featured a lifestyle shot of the product surrounded by various sets in the LEGO Creator range. However, one of these models was an odd one out: a red Vespa – at a smaller scale than the new one – that we’d never seen before.
The red Vespa hasn’t appeared as an official product yet. However, the official announcement of this other Vespa suggests two possibilities for its release.
The first is that it simply debuts as a conventional LEGO set in the Creator line. One of the other sets in the picture is 40469 Tuk Tuk, which was available this way for most of 2021. 40468 Yellow Taxi, which also appears in the picture, was released in a similar manner.
The other possibility is that the Vespa is released as a promotional item, either with purchases over a certain threshold or with the Vespa itself. 40220 London Bus is an example of this idea: it was available with qualifying purchases during 2016 and 2017, although it was also available for direct purchase from the LEGO store in Leicester Square.
A better analogue may be 40433 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition. This 2019 set is a shrunk-down version of 76139 1989 Batmobile, and is more directly compatible with minifigures than the larger-scale version. It was only available with purchases of the larger 1989 Batmobile, suggesting a similar promotion for the Vespa itself.
Of course, the absence – so far – of the red Vespa suggests it may not be releasing at all as an official product. If you can’t bear to wait for confirmation of its existence, 10298 Vespa 125 will be available to buy at LEGO.com from March 1 onwards.
