Creating a Blocks magazine cover

The latest edition of Blocks magazine features an in-depth look at the making of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures — and to capture the Star Wars poster style, the team turned to Macro LEGO Universe to compose a cover for the issue. The following has been shared by the magazine to show what goes into producing the cover.

A lot of planning and work goes into each issue, which begins many months before it will be on shop shelves. One aspect of the production that always both inspires and challenges the team is the creation of the cover – and for Issue 22 this was no exception.

Daniel Jamieson, better known as Macro LEGO Universe, produces incredibly creative LEGO photography and artwork. One of his pieces in particular was shared around social media worldwide, a LEGO version of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie poster. Blocks Editor Rob Paton saw the potential for a Star Wars movie-style poster for The Freemaker Adventures.

‘The idea was to create a poster style image for The Freemaker Adventures that was in keeping with the classic painted poster artwork for the original trilogy,’ Daniel explains. ‘So I shot a range of angled poses against green screen with each character and ship. I then positioned them on the poster with some layers of coloured light and effects, before finally adding some paint texture effects.’

The cover went through various versions to ensure that the classic Star Wars feel of the show was captured. As well as showing Rowan’s conflicting loyalties either side of him – his family to his left, Naare to his right – Darth Vader looms large at the top of the image. X-wings and TIE fighters also feature on the cover, representing the timeframe that the series takes place in.

The team were so happy with the result that the cover was turned into a poster, given away from the LEGO booth at the recent Star Wars: Celebration Europe event. To be in with a chance of winning one of the posters – signed by LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures creators – along with LEGO Freemakers sets, get involved with the Blocks build competition.
