How to make custom LEGO Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One minifigures

Just come out of the cinema, and buzzing for LEGO Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One sets and minifigures? You won’t find any joy at the LEGO Store, but these customs can fill that void…

While the LEGO Group does have an official Mission: Impossible tie-in courtesy of LEGO Dimensions, it’s essentially limited to a single Ethan Hunt minifigure. That does nobody watching the franchise’s newest instalment Dead Reckoning Part One any favours, because you’re still missing key characters like Ilsa, Benji, Grace, Gabriel, Paris and so on.

The good news is that the custom minifigure community can usually be relied on to fill in any gaps, and – as it turns out – the necessary pieces already exist for most of these characters. Instagram user legomaker98 has cleverly come up with purist solutions for seven members of Dead Reckoning Part One’s main cast, which you can reassemble at home by tracking down the required pieces on the secondary market (or, where available, through Pick a Brick).

There are some ingenious part choices here, such as George Weasley’s torso from 71028 Harry Potter Series 2 for Gabriel, or Scabior’s legs from this summer’s 76415 The Battle of Hogwarts for Paris. Kittridge’s head – taken from General Pryde, who appears exclusively in 2019’s 75256 Kylo Ren’s Shuttle – feels especially appropriate for the director of the IMF, communicating so much of his character in just a few features.

All in all, legomaker98 has crafted custom minifigures for Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), Grace (Hayley Atwell), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny), Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), Gabriel (Esai Morales) and Paris (Pom Klementieff). The only major characters missing from Dead Reckoning Part One’s stacked line-up are Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson).

At this stage, we’re unlikely to ever see official LEGO sets based on the Mission: Impossible franchise – the franchise-spanning LEGO Dimensions video game was a melting pot of retro tie-ins, from E.T. to The Goonies, that have unfortunately stayed as one-offs – but it is listed among the accepted intellectual properties on LEGO Ideas, so you never know…

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is in cinemas now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
