The dystopian city that inspired LEGO 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops

LEGO 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops expands the urban streets of the theme to bring a dystopian edge that has its roots in a real-life city.

Now officially revealed, 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops features 3,244 pieces across a 32×32 baseplate, offering a lot of room to capture every detail of mech workshops. It capitalists on what LEGO NINJAGO does best – mechs – and expands that into a story-filled build.

The latest LEGO NINJAGO City set expands on the world established by its predecessors, 70620 NINJAGO City and 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens. The ongoing style of these sets evokes images of dystopian cities and cyberpunk styles. The aesthetic borrows some design language from major dystopian franchises, like Bladerunner and Ghost in the Shell – which are in turn inspired by a real-life city.

Brick Fanatics‘ Matthew has prepared a deep dive into the history of that city and what features we can see parallels in 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops. While NINJAGO is firmly planted in a fantasy world, its inspirations find their home in some real-world structures.

71837 NINJAGO City Workshops will retail for for £219.99 in the UK, $249.99 in the US, and €249.99 in Europe when it launches on March 1, 2025.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
