Fans have mixed thoughts on LEGO BrickLink Series 10 sets

The five finalists in Series 10 of the BrickLink Designer Program have been confirmed, and the community’s thoughts are mixed across the board.

After a few days of ruminating on their thoughts on the five finalists in the 10th series, the BrickLink Designer Program subreddit has seen plenty of discussion regarding the building-heavy round.

Most of the discussion from fans online doesn’t concern any of the building or the building-adjacent kiosk, though. Instead, many thoughts are circulating for the Wild West Train Station by llucky. Multiple fans praise the fan designer for getting so many Wild West models over the finish line and onto their shelves.

“Llucky has single-handedly built an entire Lego theme,” comments flyinghighguy. “Incredible.”

Llucky has four Wild West sets in the BrickLink Designer Program so far, including the Wild West Train, which will go ideally with the train station. They’re one of amny recurring fan designers in the BrickLink Designer Program, but few have stuck to one specific theme.

“I love how he did the walls for the siding on that train station,” responds Schraufabagel. “I think it’s the first time I’ve seen it done with just staggered plates.”

While the staggered plate effect looks good, it is not new for the train station. The Wild West general store from an earlier series used a similar technique for the walls, giving the building the iconic manmade appearance that is signature to the period.

Other discussions online since the announcement concern the only castle submission in Series 10, which is just not enough for some.

“Oof, I feel like there were several stronger castle submissions, too bad,” writes freddy157. “Maybe it will grow on me.”

“It’s almost like they just don’t want actual castles,” said stupac2. “Which I get not wanting to do every time, but do it some of the time! There’s been like two… And honestly, even though I like it, Dustmark Keep isn’t really an epic castle. I’m very surprised it has 4,000 pieces, given how much smaller it looks than the Mountain Fortress.

The head of the program has previously noted the troubles regarding the popularity of Castle projects and the BrickLink Designer Program. With nearly 600 submissions in Series 10, though, more than 200 Castle submissions are not moving forward in Series 10.

The build that ended up being picked to represent Castle in Series 10 represents a jousting tournament, and some fans aren’t impressed with the pick.

“Everything good but not great,” nanoH20 states. “The tournament thing is cool, but way too compressed in scale for me. Like they are trying to do too much.”

Most of Series 10 is focused on modular buildings, including a fire house and a diner themed to outer space. The community’s thoughts on these projects are more positive overall.

“A lot of good sets. I’m a big fan of the fire house,” writes sword_of_the_morning. “I don’t own the modular fire house, and really like the design of this one, so I’ll definitely be adding it to my city.”

Comments on rocknbricks31’s Space Café are more condensed, but show plenty of excitement from enthusiasts online. Both of these buildings are built on baseplates with only a few modifications needed to fit them into a modular city. Previous proposals since the start of the program have had to be modified to eschew these modular building aspects, leaving some online confused.

“I thought they had decided to stop doing modulars in the BrickLink Designer Program, or are they going to change them by the time they come out and put them on raised bases like the art factory again?” Dan-Vids queried.

It’s an interesting question, and the approval of these two builds seemingly opens the door for fully modular models once again. It will be worth keeping an eye on this topic in future series of the program.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

What? There have been so many castles and castle fans complain when there are more than castles in the theme. Castle fans will never be pleased.
