First details on rumoured LEGO Minecraft 18+ set

Initial details have surfaced on the rumoured LEGO Minecraft 18+ set, and it sounds like the LEGO Group is borrowing a similar concept from another of its video game themes.

Word of the first-ever 18+ LEGO Minecraft set first surfaced in November 2023, but its potential contents have remained a mystery – until now. Instagram user exabrickslegogo_ reports that 21265 is codenamed ‘Working Table’, and will consist of a workbench that’s open on both sides and contains a miniature world with a variety of different terrains.

If that sounds familiar, well, it should: the LEGO Group has already tried something in the same wheelhouse with 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block, a giant yellow box that conceals multiple worlds and levels from the world of Super Mario. Those brief details on 21265 Working Table suggest we’re basically looking at the same thing from a Minecraft perspective.

The locations included in the Minecraft set’s miniature world are said to be a swamp, a village, a cherry blossom garden and ‘ice spikes’. It’s also thought to come with eight small characters, presumably built to microscale rather than as minifigures. There’s not a whole lot of breathing room in the price for anything bigger: 21265 Working Table is rumoured to retail for $89.99 for 1,195 pieces. That’s less than half the price of 2021’s 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block.

This does answer the question of what a LEGO Minecraft 18+ set could look like, though, given the theme is otherwise comprised almost entirely of relatively simple blocky builds (appropriately for the source material). Taking things down to microscale would not only distinguish the model from the rest of the theme, but could also offer a more intricate and involved build experience.

21265 Working Table is now rumoured to launch on August 1, 2024. Check out the entire 2024 slate as it stands below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

That’s a Lego mario set, not a Minecraft one.
