First look at LEGO Marvel 76172 Spider-Man and Sandman Showdown

An early review has given us a first look at 2021’s first 4+ LEGO Marvel set, 76172 Spider-Man and Sandman Showdown.

The 45-piece set – which would once have been branded ‘Juniors’ – includes a 4×4 ride for Spider-Man and a mini-catapult for Sandman. Both minifigures feature new printing, which should make this a great cop for character collectors given its low price of £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99.

As with most 4+ sets, it’s built around large, single-purpose moulds, offering a great gateway from DUPLO to System for younger builders. YouTuber Ashnflash has received an early copy of the set and published a review, praising the set for its minifigures – but lamenting the missed opportunity for something new.

“It’s a 4+ set – what more could you ask for?” he says. “You’re getting a villain that we haven’t gotten for a year and a bit now, and specifically in this outfit it’s been a very long time, so it’s great to be getting here, it really is. But I just wish that it could have been a new villain like Electro, or someone that we’ve never gotten.”

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
