First look at LEGO Marvel 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron in-hand

This summer’s LEGO Marvel sets are already turning up on store shelves in the US, giving us our first look at 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron in-hand.

A full wave of LEGO Marvel sets will drop at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores on August 1, but as is often the way, stores in select regions have started putting products out on shelves ahead of their official release dates. That includes Target in the US, where YouTuber MiniSuperHeroesToday found and purchased an early copy of 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron.

He’s now published an early review of the 613-piece superhero set to give us our first look at it beyond official images. And first impressions are pretty strong: MSHT describes it as ‘a behemoth’ that ‘looks great’. The model recreates a very specific moment from the first Avengers sequel that sees the main cast jumping through the air while taking on Hydra forces.

MSHT LEGO Marvel 76291 The Avengers Assemble Age of Ultron early review 7 1024x576

“I actually think it translates to LEGO pretty well,” MSHT says. “I’m really, really happy with it honestly. It is a little bit smaller than I thought based off of the box art we saw at the time of the reveal. There’s a lot going on here, there are some play features, but this is definitely aimed at just being a semi-diorama, but it’s not built in the diorama way that [76261 Spider-Man Final Battle] is.”

Those play features include an exploding bunker, a turret with stud shooters, and the ability to separate the main build into three separate sections – the bunker, tower and central area. The set is otherwise geared around display, with the relatively new curved transparent bar elements for posing the Avengers, and even regular transparent 2×2 round bricks for posing Hulk at an angle.

“I really, really like the way [the central area] displays on its own, but even with those side builds it’s really great too,” MSHT says. “Honestly, I could see a reality where the LEGO Group would just make [the central area and tower] and would get rid of [the bunker], but they probably had a budget that they needed to make a $100 set, so they got this as close as it could.”

This is the only LEGO Marvel set besides 76269 Avengers Tower to include all six of the main Avengers cast from the early days of the MCU: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye. But not all those minifigures are made equal. MSHT singles out Thor as especially disappointing for reusing a torso from the first Avengers movie rather than his Age of Ultron outfit, for example, but lifts up Hawkeye’s new torso and leg printing as a highlight.

The YouTuber wraps up the review by calling 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron a ‘phenomenal’ set, noting in particular that the minifigure line-up helps to add some value to what’s otherwise a relatively expensive product from a price-per-piece perspective. You can make up your own mind on the model by pre-ordering your copy ahead of its August 1 release.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
