Five things the latest rumoured LEGO set prices tell us about 2024

A list of rumoured LEGO set prices and product numbers for 2024 doesn’t seem like a lot to go on at first glance – but reading between the lines, there’s more here than you might assume.

Lists of product numbers and set prices without names or any other identifying details may appear fruitless, but the LEGO Group has probably more identifiable patterns than it would care to admit across its product portfolio. And it’s with the knowledge of its current and recent releases that we can better understand what to expect from the LEGO Group in 2024, courtesy of initial details from Instagram user priceyplasticproduct (further ratified by reputable source Brick Clicker).

Here are five key takeaways from those first lists of sets for LEGO Marvel, NINJAGO, Minecraft, Ideas and Super Mario

5 – LEGO could be moving away from mechs

Take a look at the price points shared for LEGO Marvel so far, and then compare them with the sets that launched in January 2023. Notice the difference? Three $15 models debuted earlier this year, comprising the obligatory trio of mech sets in 76241 Hulk Mech Armor76242 Thanos Mech Armor and 76243 Rocket Mech Armor. But just one $15 set is currently on the cards for January 2024.

Does that mean the LEGO Group is also moving away from Marvel mechs? It seems like an odd move given the concept is about to be adapted to a galaxy far, far away, but maybe August’s LEGO Star Wars mechs are exactly why the LEGO Group is leaving them behind for Marvel: it turns out you can have too many mechs. Who knew?

All that said, there are still gaps either side of 76277 that could yet be filled by more $15 sets if this list isn’t completely comprehensive. But at first glance, maybe Hulk, Thanos and Rocket are our last gasp for Marvel mechs…

4 – Ideas may be magnifying its family tree

Two LEGO Ideas sets are reportedly on the way in January and February, priced at $79.99 each. That’s a relatively inexpensive price tag for the crowdsourcing theme, and a quick glance at the longlist of LEGO Ideas sets currently in production singles out two candidates (given José María’s LEGO Insects is rumoured to be coming in 2023): Minibrick Productions’ Polaroid OneStep SX-70 and Ivan Guerrero’s Your Family Tree.

It’s easy to see the polaroid camera reaching that price point, but the initial concept for the family tree – designed and approved part of a contest in partnership with Target – doesn’t really look like an $80 set. Perhaps the LEGO Ideas team has decided to magnify the model for release, increasing the size and scope of Guerrero’s pitch? Or it’s planning to scale John Cramp’s Red Telephone Box way down…

3 – Minecraft is still one of LEGO’s most consistent themes

Another January, another full wave of LEGO Minecraft sets. According to these rumours, a total of six different products inspired by the blocky video game will debut in early 2024, proving that LEGO Minecraft is still one of the company’s most consistent themes. While Star Wars, Marvel and DC branch out into different types of sets – for better or worse – and play around with formats, concepts and release strategies, Minecraft is one licensed theme that’s happy to just chug away.

2 – Super Mario really does look to be winding down

Earlier this year, the LEGO Group brought forward the retirement dates for every current LEGO Super Mario set to no later than summer 2024, suggesting it was calling time on its partnership with Nintendo. The first list of 2024 sets from the interactive theme doesn’t do much to dispel that notion, as just two new products will reportedly arrive on shelves in January.

Again, the list provided by priceyplasticproduct may not be whole, so there could yet be more to come. But any planned expansion packs will require a starter course to function, and all three of Mario, Luigi and Peach’s starter courses are currently scheduled to leave shelves by July next year…

1 – 2024 is shaping up to be pretty affordable

Maybe the biggest takeaway from these lists (so far) is that next year may be a bit more affordable than 2023. LEGO Marvel and NINJAGO top out at $69.99 and $64.99 price points respectively, where in January 2023 they both gunned for $99.99 sets, while both themes include products retailing for just $9.99. Factor in both of LEGO Ideas’ comparatively cheaper sets – its first 2023 model was 21338 A-Frame Cabin, which retails for $179.99 – and our wallets may collectively have a much happier time in 2024.

That’s based on the set prices and product numbers rumoured so far, anyway. There’s obviously much more to come – and it’s worth remembering that even these details are still just rumours, so may not pan out as expected.

Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
