Friends star Matthew Perry dies aged 54

Best known for his role in Friends, actor Matthew Perry has died at the age of 54 in his home in Los Angeles.

The actor was best known for his role as Chandler Bing in Friend, a sitcom that ran for ten years between 1994 and 2004. Since then, he has acted on and off in various other films and TV shows, specialising in comedic roles. More recently in 2022, Perry also released his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, chronicling his time on Friends and as a young actor.

In it, he opened up about his struggles with sobriety. Much of his work in later life centred around helping others with addiction, including the creation of the Perry House in Malibu, a sober living facility for men.

The cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed at the time of writing. However, LA law enforcement confirmed to US media that Perry was found dead in his home at the age of 54. Tributes have already started flooding in for the actor, including from Maggie Wheeler who played opposite Perry as Chandler’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Janice on Friends.

“What a loss. The world will miss you Matthew Perry,” she wrote on Instagram. “The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a tribute, writing: “Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening. I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved – and you will be missed.”

‘Not Matthew Perry’ quickly started trending, as fans of the actor shared their shock and surprise on X.
