How to buy LEGO pieces

The LEGO Group debuts new pieces in sets all the time, but you don’t need to buy the entire set if you’re only after a few specific elements.

Building LEGO means building sets according to the instructions for many but, for others, it means getting creative and building something new from your own imagination. We see this at work in fan-designed projects like LEGO Ideas and BrickLink Designer Program sets but anyone can get stuck into building something fresh that they thought of themselves.

Rebrickable is a useful resource for modifying an existing set but you can also stock up on individual LEGO bricks to stack up a library of LEGO elements, ready to be used in any model you decide to design. This is also a good way to get a hold of unique pieces without buying an entire set you might otherwise not want. A prime example is the long-awaited goat from 10332 Medieval Town Square. If you don’t want to shell out £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99 but still want the goat, you can buy it individually for a fraction of the cost.

Where can I buy individual LEGO bricks?

As for how you buy these bricks, you have options. One is heading down to your local LEGO store in person and picking out what pieces you want from the Pick a Brick service. You can fill up boxes of different sizes, costing £8.99 / $10.99 / €10.99 for the smaller box and £16.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 for the larger. So long as your box can close, you can fit in as much as you can. Naturally, that means you can get more pieces if you opt for smaller ones but if you choose to take home larger elements, you won’t be able to fit as much.

Not every LEGO element is available in LEGO stores; there are simply too many to make that a viable option. Luckily, there is another way you can order almost every LEGO piece out there. Roughly three to four months after a LEGO set goes on sale, the majority of its pieces will be available to buy on the online Pick a Brick service.

There are two classes of LEGO pieces on the online Pick a Brick, Bestseller and Standard. Bestseller elements are processed more quickly, getting sent from Poland and usually reaching customers between nine and 15 business days. Standard orders will take longer, being shipped from Denmark and taking up to 21 business days. For both options, there’s a £5.50 service fee for orders below £11.

Prices on LEGO Pick a Brick range from £0.02 for small simple elements to £35.23 for a much larger (20 x 40 x 7 stud) boat hull. Pick a Brick online is the perfect way to pick up specific elements or bulk order various parts with ease.

If you just want a sheer quantity of LEGO bricks, it’s also worth keeping an eye on secondhand marketplaces like Facebook, eBay, and Vinted. People will often sell huge amounts of LEGO in bulk, looking to clear up some space in their homes. You might need to spend some time separating different elements from the load of LEGO bricks, but it can be a cost-effective way to stock up on miscellaneous parts if you get lucky.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
