Just one new LEGO gift-with-purchase is available from today, and it’s tied to a specific Technic set – but this buildable steering wheel is way more impressive than it looks.
40894 Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear Steering Wheel is free with all purchases of 42232 Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear from July 1 to 6 (or while stocks last), and although at face value it looks like a fairly rudimentary freebie, it’s actually more functional than a lot of mid-range Technic cars these days.
As covered in more detail in our hands-on review, the steering wheel mirrors one of the best bits of functionality in the 1:8 LEGO megacar: its nine-speed transmission. There’s a paddle gear system built into the wheel that ticks the visual indicator through its nine gears. It’s the sort of thing you’ll fiddle around with for ages after putting it together, which is exactly what you want from a LEGO Technic set.
On top of that there’s a gimbal of sorts that keeps the steering wheel’s central display in a fixed orientation, even while you turn it left and right. That’s a cherry on top more than a selling point on its own, but it does speak to how much care and attention to detail has gone into what could have just been a static display model.
Instead, 40894 Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear Steering Wheel feels like a genuinely considered gift-with-purchase that makes 42232 Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear a much easier day-one purchase. The latest LEGO Technic Ultimate Concept Car – the sixth in the collection – is arguably the best yet (see our full review for more), so if you’ve got your eye on it the GWP could be enough to warrant putting the pedal to the metal.
