Knights of the Old Republic and Clone Wars rumoured for LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary

The LEGO Star Wars team will reportedly celebrate the theme’s 25th anniversary by adding obscure minifigures to sets, including a Knights of the Old Republic character and a fan-favourite Clone Trooper.

Following roughly in the footsteps of the theme’s 20th-anniversary celebrations in 2019 – which saw retro LEGO Star Wars minifigures such as Lando Calrissian and the original Darth Vader resurrected and scattered across a wave of specially-designed sets – next year’s LEGO Star Wars line-up will apparently see much-requested characters brought to life for the first time, then placed at random into new sets.

The rumoured 75379 R2-D2, for example, is said to include minifigures of both R2-D2 (standard) and Darth Malak (surprising), a Sith Lord who first appeared in the Knights of the Old Republic video game series (pictured up top alongside Darth Revan, who arrived in minifigure form in 2014). That’s according to Max Börnicke, one of the team behind the frequently-reliable Promobricks, adding weight to a rumour that would otherwise sound a little too much like a dream scenario.

The same source reports that 75387 Tantive IV Hallway (once rumoured to be a diorama, but now believed to be closer in style and format to 75324 Dark Trooper Attack) will come with the first-ever Fives minifigure alongside Darth Vader, Captain Antilles, two Stormtroopers and two Rebel Fleet Troopers. Fives was an ARC Trooper in the Clone Wars who eventually joined the 501st Legion.

Again, there’s no narrative or thematic connection between the Episode IV scene and Fives, so it sounds like the LEGO Group is just using the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars in 2024 to bring us minifigures that would otherwise never make their way into a regular set. It’s a bit like the classic May the 4th polybag minifigures (which often pulled on obscure threads) turned up to 11. And it leaves the door open to so many more obscure characters in 2024, because chances are we won’t just see two…

While this news does come from a fairly reliable source, it shouldn’t be treated as confirmed until we get official word from the LEGO Group. For now, approach it with the same scepticism as any other rumour.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
