LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age officially revealed

The LEGO Group has officially unveiled 21340 Tales of the Space Age, the cheapest LEGO Ideas set since 2018’s 21314 TRON: Legacy.

Based on a design by Jan Woznica and given the green light in October 2022 – as part of the record-breaking first 2022 review21340 Tales of the Space Age is soaring on to LEGO Store shelves at breakneck speed, and will be available to purchase from May 5, 2023. The best part? It will only cost £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99, which makes it the most affordable LEGO Ideas set in over five years.

The most recent set to come in under that threshold from the crowdsourcing theme was 21314 TRON: Legacy, which debuted in April 2018 for £29.99 / $34.99 / €34.99. Since then, we’ve seen an increasing number of bigger and more expensive sets approved for production, while smaller models have been relegated to gifts-with-purchase, such as 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures and 40566 Ray the Castaway.

21340 Tales of the Space Age therefore represents a welcome return to more affordable LEGO Ideas models – without skimping on quality. The 688-piece model remains incredibly true to Woznica’s original pitch, building simple yet effective space-related imagery across a series of colourful – but minimalist – vignettes. The only major difference is the addition of a fourth image.

Thankfully, that bonus image keeps to the same style as the rest, and hasn’t massively inflated the price of 21340 Tales of the Space Age. The four different vignettes have a backdrop two studs deep, incorporating not only the picture hanging element from the LEGO Art range – so these can be popped on your walls – but also Technic bricks and pins to allow them to connect together.

Your display options for the four models in 21340 Tales of the Space Age are pretty vast, then, as exemplified through the official images: you can place them together, apart or individually, in whatever configuration you choose.

Key features from Woznica’s original design, such as the clever use of circular elements to represent the crescent moon, have also been retained. Together, the four postcard-sized builds capture key moments in the history (and future) of space exploration, from a space shuttle launch and moon base to a black hole and lunar eclipse.

21340 Tales of the Space Age becomes the 48th LEGO Ideas set, and will be available to purchase from May 5, 2023 for VIP members (with a wider release on May 8). Keep an eye on Brick Fanatics for our full review soon.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
