LEGO 2K Drive open-world racing game officially announced

The LEGO Group and 2K Games have unveiled LEGO 2K Drive, a brand new AAA open-world racing game that allows players to ‘build any vehicle’ and ‘drive anywhere’.

Those are big promises for what looks set to be a big game, which launches on PC and consoles on May 19, 2023. Developed by Visual Concepts, LEGO 2K Drive is set in the open world of Bricklandia, which encompasses multiple biomes filled with races, challenges, mini-games and collectibles. Racing is described as a ‘fast-paced, off-the-wall experience’, which takes its cues from legendary kart racers like Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing with power-up abilities.

The game also includes a ‘diverse customisation system’, which will allow players to build their own vehicles from scratch using a library of over 1,000 different LEGO elements. If you’d rather spend more time racing than building, you can choose from pre-set vehicles – many of which will be familiar to fans of LEGO City, Creator and Speed Champions, including the McLaren Solus GT and F1 LM.

LEGO 2K Drive is the first in what the LEGO Group is calling a ‘multi-title partnership’ with the publisher, hinting at rumours 2K Games is also working on other LEGO sports releases.

“Video games have long been an important way our fans experience the magic of the LEGO System-in- Play, and 2K’s strong track record of delivering quality, innovative titles for a broad range of audiences makes them the perfect partner to create the next iconic AAA LEGO games,” said Remi Marcelli, Head of LEGO GAME. “Beginning with LEGO 2K Drive, we’re excited for fans to experience a fresh new take that builds on the LEGO humour and fun fans have come to expect.”

In addition to the base content shipped with the game, LEGO 2K Drive will be consistently updated for at least 12 months post-launch through the Year 1 Drive Pass. As well as a new biome, each of the pass’s four new seasons will introduce new vehicles and themes. Individual prices for the pass are yet to be confirmed, but you’ll find it included in deluxe versions of the game.

Three different editions of LEGO 2K Drive are available to pre-order from today, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. The Standard Edition will retail for £59.99 / $69.99 / €59.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X and £49.99 / $59.99 / €49.99 on other formats, while the Awesome Edition will retail for £84.99 / $99.99 / €99.99, and includes a new vehicle, in-game minifigure, vehicle flair, the Year 1 Drive Pass and a physical 3-in-1 LEGO set of the Aquadirt Racer vehicle.

The Awesome Rivals Edition retails for £99.99 / $119.99 / €119.99, and includes multiple new vehicles alongside all the content in the Awesome Edition. This version will only be available digitally, while both the Standard Edition and Awesome Edition will be available both physically and digitally. All pre-orders will also receive the Aquadirt Racer Pack.

“With the history the LEGO brand holds, we were very conscious of the responsibility we had to both our partners and long-time fans of LEGO play, while still thinking about how we can bring something new and unique to a LEGO title,” added Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts. “For LEGO 2K Drive, we assembled a best-in-class team of game makers who poured their hearts into an unforgettable experience we can’t wait to share with fans.”

LEGO 2K Drive arrives on consoles and PC on May 19, 2023. The Awesome Edition and Awesome Rivals Edition will both be available with three-day early access. I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
