LEGO 2K Drive tease sparks memories of LEGO Racers – and hopes of customisation

As we continue to wait for the official announcement of LEGO 2K Drive, fans have been speculating about what we can expect from the upcoming new game.

2K as a company has been around since 2005, and has published games such as NBA 2K, WWE 2K23, Borderlands and BioShock. And while we have had LEGO racing games in the past, with LEGO Racers 2 coming out in 2001, fans’ expectations since then have gotten significantly higher.

Comments have already been springing up all over the internet, and users on reddit had a lot to say about what they hope to see. Customisation seems to be the main theme across the board, and the teaser released by the LEGO Group didn’t reveal very much on that front, leaving fans to speculate amongst themselves for now.

A lot of fans are excited to see Rocket Racer, the final boss of LEGO Racers 1 and 2, make his reappearance after so many years of not being seen in-game. Legodudelol9a commented: “I hope there’s some kind of story to it like Lego Racers 1 and 2. I’d love to have a new rematch against Rocket Racer.”

As well as seeing old familiar characters, there’s a lot of anticipation about newer characters and different kinds of vehicles, with Dalekbuster523 questioning: “Given how LEGO have gained so many film/TV franchise rights for sets in the meantime, I’m interested to see if some of those characters make it into this game. Could we get Marvel and Indiana Jones characters as playable racers, for instance? And race in the jeep from Jurassic Park?”

In addition to the characters, there’s also excitement around what the actual game will give fans in addition to the racing experience. JOSHBUSGUY notes: “Oh god it would be so cool to have a Lego open world game similar to forza horizon imagine all the cool Lego areas there could be.” With customisable characters and vehicles, a new setting to explore would really bring together the LEGO gaming experience, as well as hopefully giving us a solid follow-up to the LEGO Racers games.

Over on Twitter, the focus seems to be a lot more on customisation options, with Set Beard to Stun (@BeardyGeoffles) commenting on the lack of custom vehicles in other LEGO games that we’ve seen since LEGO Racers 2 came out in 2001.

John Ziggy (@Kolzig73) also pointed out: “Awesome, a third Lego Racer game would be fantastic. As would be re-releasing the two earlier Lego Racer games.” Many of the original LEGO Racers fans are starting to see LEGO 2K Drive as its natural successor, and if it lives up to expectations, this game could be a really solid addition to the LEGO gaming catalogue.

We’re very likely to get the official announcement from the LEGO Group about LEGO 2K Drive on March 23, and until then we can only really imagine what we’re in for.
