One of LEGO Star Wars’ best helmets is leaving shelves for good

Here’s why this clone helmet is still a must-buy before it retires

One of LEGO Star Wars’ best helmets is leaving shelves for good

After three years on shelves, one of the most detailed LEGO Star Wars helmets ever made is about to retire – and is already selling out in some places.

75349 Captain Rex Helmet is one of 13 LEGO Star Wars sets currently due to leave shelves at the end of July 2026, and if it's missing from your collection when August arrives, future you might not be very happy.

Why? The answer lies in the build, the details, the Easter eggs and the character behind the helmet itself. Here are all the reasons why 75349 Captain Rex Helmet deserves a place in any LEGO Star Wars collection before it's gone for good.

A surprisingly fun build

LEGO Helmet Collection sets often follow a similar formula. That's understandable, but it can make some of them blend together. Captain Rex's helmet doesn't have that problem.

The build immediately feels different. The layered techniques around the mouthpiece create an unusual shape, while the mountain of tiny pieces that forms the top of the helmet is immensely satisfying to assemble. Every one of the set's 854 pieces earns its place.

Much of that uniqueness comes from the source material. In-universe, Rex welded together parts of his Phase I and Phase II helmets, combining the visor and T-shaped brow into his iconic design. Building that yourself gives the set a real sense of personality.

There is one sticking point. The breathing apparatus isn't perfectly accurate to the source material, and fans have debated the design since the set launched. Still, Rex's helmet is difficult to recreate in bricks at this scale. For the size and price of the model, it's a compromise that's easy to forgive.

Stickers done right

Most LEGO fans groan when they open a box and find a sticker sheet. In a perfect world, every element would be printed. Reality is less generous, but stickers become much easier to accept when they add this much character.

At the bottom of the helmet, stickers recreate the weld marks from where Rex fused his helmets together. They're tricky to line up, but they look fantastic when you do. The respirator filters above feature the correct number of vertical lines, while the jaig eyes stand out as the set's defining feature. Mostly brick-built and finished with a sticker, they represent bravery in Mandalorian culture. Sseeing them recreated so faithfully will put a smile on any Clone Wars fan's face.

Right at the top sit Rex's tally marks. It's a tiny nod to the countless battle droids he destroyed throughout The Clone Wars, but it's exactly the sort of detail that elevates the model from good to great.

And while we're talking details, the rangefinder deserves a mention too. It moves smoothly, sits perfectly against the helmet and adds just a touch of playability to an otherwise static display piece. It's simple, but it's great.

It's all in the eyes

One tiny detail makes a huge difference to 75349 Captain Rex Helmet: the eyes.

It's impossible not to compare this set to 75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet, which launched alongside Rex in 2023 before retiring in February 2025. Some prefer Cody's helmet overall, but Rex wins when it comes to the visor.

On Cody, the visor sits just a quarter of a stud behind the helmet's brow, making the face look relatively flat. On Rex, the visor sits another half-stud further back, creating genuine depth and making it feel as though the visor sits underneath the armour.

It's an incredibly small design choice, but it has a massive impact. The helmet feels more alive, as though there's actually someone wearing it.

Rex’s hidden secret

Rex has one thing Cody doesn't: arguably the coolest Easter egg in the entire LEGO Helmet Collection. Turn the helmet around and you'll spot a circular panel on the back. Cody has one too, but his doesn't move.

Rex's does. Pull it out and you'll find a pink element hidden inside. Yep, it's his brain, and the bit you're now holding, the inhibitor chip.

The LEGO Group could have ignored that detail entirely. Instead, the designers hid one of the most important and tragic elements of Rex's story inside the model itself. That alone is enough to make fans fall in love with this set.

Why not both?

I promise this is the last time I’ll mention Cody. But if you already own the retired Clone Commander Cody helmet, you should seriously consider picking up Rex too.

Salt and pepper. Macaroni and cheese. Bread and butter. There aren’t many LEGO sets that feel so naturally paired despite being sold separately. Whether you display them side by side or place them on opposite ends of a shelf, they complement each other perfectly.

Out of the 46 LEGO Star Wars sets in my own collection (according to Brick Search), no two fit together quite like Rex and Cody.

That being said, Brick Search doesn’t just track your collection and wishlist. It also highlights which sets are due to retire soon, helping you avoid missing out on sets like Cody.

Even so, if I had to choose just one? I’d pick Rex every time.

One of Star Wars’ greatest heroes

Finally, there's the character himself. Captain Rex is one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars, thanks largely to The Clone Wars. For many fans, some of the franchise's greatest moments come from that series.

The Siege of Mandalore arc remains my favourite Star Wars story of all time, and I know I'm far from alone in feeling that way. If you love The Clone Wars, this set isn't just another helmet. It's a celebration of one of the series' greatest heroes.

A helmet worth hunting down

LEGO Star Wars 75349 Captain Rex Helmet lifestyle featured-1

At £59.99 in the UK, $69.99 in the US and €69.99 in Europe, 75349 Captain Rex Helmet sits comfortably in the middle of the LEGO Star Wars price range. But with 854 pieces, an inventive build, fantastic display presence and more than a few nods to Rex's story, it feels worth every penny.

That's why I think you should pick it up before it leaves shelves. Miss out now, and you might spend years wishing you hadn't. 75349 Captain Rex Helmet is available while stocks last online and in LEGO Stores, although it has already begun selling out in locations around the world.

If you spot one in stock, don't wait too long. Once it's gone, it's gone for good.
