LEGO BrickHeadz 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower review

Sonic the Hedgehog’s biggest fan also receives his first-ever LEGO BrickHeadz set this year in the shape of 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower.

The LEGO Group has once again expanded its line-up of licensed BrickHeadz characters, with two video game icons launching on September 1. The first characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe will become blocky display models on that date, marking the pair’s debut as part of the theme.

In addition to 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog, his two-tailed best friend also arrives on September 1, with 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower acting as a something of a companion piece. However, if you were originally only thinking of picking up one of the sets, is it worth spending more to get both anthropomorphic animal characters?

Let’s face it, if you’re a fan of SEGA’s blue blur and his extensive supporting cast, then chances are you’re probably already sold on 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower. The 214th BrickHeadz set offers up a suitably cute (and blocky) rendition of Sonic’s foxy-faced friend, with a build that perfectly captures the look of the character.

Thanks to the tried-and-tested method of assembling BrickHeadz models, 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower comes together very simply and speedily. Work first begins on the character’s orange torso section, complete with a white 2×4 wedge plate to simulate Tails’ furry chest.

After that, it’s a straightforward case of constructing the character’s head, with most of the model’s details being centred around the fox’s brick-built face, ears and fur, as well as a small orange spit curl on his brow. 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower also includes blue printed eye pieces and a pair of red and white sneakers for feet, as well as two tails (natch), which slot into the rear of the character (thanks to a couple of Technic pins) and can be repositioned as required.

The BrickHeadz build is finished off as always with a black baseplate for Tails to stand on, plus a silvery grey wrench accessory to hold, completing the look of the character as both an inventor and engineer.

Sonic and Tails are as inseparable a pair as any pop culture duo, so it therefore makes a lot of sense for 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower to be released alongside 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog. As with his speedy blue friend, Tails successfully makes the leap from video game screen to BrickHeadz build, fitting in perfectly with the rest of the theme’s various licensed characters.

Despite the inclusion of numerous pointy pieces and a blockier appearance, 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower represents an instantly-recognisable interpretation of the flying fox, one that definitely belongs right at home in any BrickHeadz collection.

As with 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog, there’s no denying that this set’s piece count to price ratio is certainly one of its biggest selling points. You can pick up 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower for £9.99 / $9.99 / €9.99, matching the cost of Sonic, with 131 pieces included with the BrickHeadz build.

That easily beats the number of elements included with other similarly-priced video game-based BrickHeadz sets such as 40624 Alex (86 pieces), 40625 Llama (100 pieces) and 40626 Zombie (81 pieces).

40628 Miles “Tails” Prower should easily satisfy any fan looking for a brick-based build of the character. Thanks to more pieces being included than in other BrickHeadz sets, the flying fox retains his cute and furry look, albeit in a much blockier form.

The addition of a wrench accessory and posable twin tails are the icing on the cake, making 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower both an essential BrickHeadz purchase and the perfect companion piece to 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog.
