LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama review

Cheap and cheerful, LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is festive fun but without a lot of Star Wars substance.

The holiday season is all about colour and food, two things that 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama certainly delivers on. After a quick and easy build that’s suited for all ages, you’re left with a genuinely delightful display set that will complete any brick-built festive display, or add some LEGO fun to your standard decorations.

Aside from the fun festivities, though, there’s not a whole lot to make it truly feel like a Star Wars set – aside from some well-designed minifigures…

— Where to buy LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama

LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is available to buy from October 1 via LEGO.com and from LEGO Stores for £25.99 / $29.99 / €29.99. Don’t expect this one to show at third-party retailers – and act fast if you want it, because it’s due to retire before the end of the year.

Offering a snapshot into life on board the Millennium Falcon at Christmas, LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is set presumably post-sequels, with Rey, Finn, and Chewbacca getting ready for the festive meal, joined by BB-8 and a Porg. The build itself is short and sweet, capturing the familiar table of the Falcon and decorating the interior with Christmassy objects. While the overall effect is undeniably cute, with colourful Christmas lights, a buildable tree, and a couple of shining stars, it is missing a certain Star Wars-y sparkle.

While there are plenty of festive trappings, from the turkey on the table to the colourful decorations, none of them really scream ‘Star Wars’. It could have done with a few more relevant references, like the Rebel Alliance Christmas jumper that Finn wears: perhaps a Star Wars creature ends up on their plates for Christmas, or the colourful lights are made up of Kyber crystals (although how Rey would get her hands on so many, don’t ask us).

There are, nonetheless, some quite nifty features packed into 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama and it’s a pleasure to display in all its festive colours. The rear of the diorama holds a secret hiding spot for the two lightsabers, which is useful if you don’t want Finn and Rey to look as though they’re ready for battle at any given moment. Even this breaks Star Wars lore briefly, however, with the lightsabers held up by the blades, which would surely cut through all but the strongest of brackets.

This biggest gripe is revealed when you strip away the festive decorations. We were curious to see if 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama would work all year round as a Millennium Falcon set, adding even more value to the relatively low-cost set, but the lack of any real Star Wars accessories leaves it looking a little drab and plain. This isn’t really a fair complaint, of course, as it is a holiday set, but it does expose that the only real colour and personality lies in the festive aspects, without much speaking to Star Wars fans.

The minifigures themselves are the real stars of the show, with an exclusive green Falcon-themed jumper for Rey and a similarly delightful festive jumper for Finn. Of course, Chewie needs no jumper, but is a decent minifigure even without one, with nougat detailing adding depth to his fur. The inclusion of these three characters reflects the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, with Rey and Finn training together and Chewbacca following a fated plotline to find his family.

They’re also joined by some adorably accurate versions of BB-8 and a Porg. BB-8 in particular has a lot of printed details on his tiny pieces, including various buttons and dials on his sides that it would have been easy to skim over in such a small set.

The one letdown is the trans-green lightsaber. While it does (to some) appear yellow in certain lights, it’s undeniably a green element – the same one originally used in classic LEGO Star Wars sets – breaking from Rey’s canon in creating a yellow lightsaber for herself, making it a disappointing inclusion in the set. Combined with the lack of Star Wars references, aside from a sort-of-cool printed element for the Jedi texts, it might leave a sour taste in the mouths of diehard fans.

At just £25.99 / $29.99 / €29.99, 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama comes in cheaper than a LEGO advent calendar and you’d arguably have more to show for it at the end. It’s a complete build that looks attractive and colourful when complete.

— LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama pros and cons —

All in all, LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is undeniably a fun Christmas build. It’s quick and easy to put together, making it an ideal choice to build with kids during the festive period, and its lack of Star Wars-ness doesn’t take away from the fact that it does what it says on the tin: offers a slice of life from a Christmas far, far away.

— Alternatives to LEGO Star Wars 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama —

An easy comparison for 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is this year’s LEGO Star Wars advent calendar, and the diorama is an easy win. For less money, you get a unified set, rather than various tiny builds that will inevitably get lost or stop drawing interest. How many different versions of brick-built snowmen or Christmas trees does any one person truly need?

Looking at a similarly-priced and -sized build, like 75360 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter, highlights the true gems of the set: the minifigures. All three are well-detailed and include fun elements like the Christmas jumpers. 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is undoubtedly good value when it comes to filling out your Star Wars population, especially for the holiday season.
