Free with all purchases of 21369 The X-Files from August 1 to 10 (or while stocks last), 40896 The X-Files: Scully’s Lab is a fitting side dish to the main course in more ways than one.
Taking its cues from the form factor of 40891 Stranger Things: WSQK Radio Station, this 221-piece vignette fills in arguably the only missing piece of the X-Files puzzle from its parent model. While 21369 The X-Files covers Mulder’s office, a spooky forest and an alien visitation, the only reference to Scully’s lab work is the microscope nestled away in the cramped and chaotic office.
Given Dana Scully joined the FBI fresh from medical school and regularly performs (or consults on) autopsies throughout the series, a laboratory feels like a suitable choice for a gift-with-purchase. Okay, so Scully never really has her own lab in the show – instead using whatever facilities are available during any given investigation – but fingers crossed you can get past the nomenclature, because this is a really nice freebie.
It looks pretty straightforward at first glance, but there are some unexpected building techniques in the way the cabinets above the sink come together, drawing a satisfying through line from those used to construct the shelving in Mulder’s office. It’s a pleasant bit of continuity that makes these models sit in harmony from beginning to end.
And that end point is a fun one to display, too – especially if you lift the grey alien from 21369 The X-Files and pop it on the operating table.
Maybe the only real downside here is that we didn’t get a second minifigure alongside Scully (even just a second grey alien, so you can display one on the table and one in the forest), but she does at least have a unique face print and torso, along with the new hairpiece from the bigger set.
As mentioned in our review of 21369 The X-Files, 40896 The X-Files: Scully’s Lab feels almost compulsory to justify the price tag of the main model, so if you don’t fancy waiting for a discount – if one comes at all – your best bet is buying it at launch.
