LEGO Disney 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie gift-with-purchase review

LEGO Disney 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie may be a smaller version of something we’ve seen before, but it’s a strong and rewarding gift-with-purchase all the same.

Available with LEGO Disney, LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Marvel purchases of £95 / $100 / €100 or more at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores from October 23 to October 31, or while stocks last, LEGO Disney 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie is an excellent and wholly valid GWP with which to mark the Disney 100th anniversary celebrations.

Coming in as the second model based on Mickey Mouse’s cartoon debut in 1928’s Steamboat Willie, 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie is a smaller version of the quite recent 21317 Steamboat Willie from 2019.

The downsizing means we have lost Minnie Mouse to accompany Mickey on his riverboat journey (and gone is the guitar too, with no-one to serenade), but the LEGO build – particularly for what is essentially a freebie – is no less of a model than the previous version. Whilst it is smaller it has retained the dimensions and character of the source material just as well, and is built in a very interesting and geometrically-satisfying way, so much so that the 9+ age recommendation is a genuine surprise.

The final result is a build that oozes that Disney nostalgia and charm, fits right in with the rest of your LEGO Disney collection, that you will have enjoyed building and you will also find yourself more often than you care to admit playing with, thanks to the roll-along play function that moves the steam pipes up and down.

All told, there’s a lot of value and LEGO enjoyment to be found in LEGO Disney 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie, particularly for what is a relatively low qualifying spend.

While stocks last, LEGO Disney 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie is available at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores with purchases of LEGO Disney, LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Marvel sets totalling £95 / $100 / €100 or more.
