LEGO Technic 42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie review

LEGO Technic has recreated a celebrated car in 42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie, while delivering the perfect entry point for newcomers to the theme.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is a limited-edition hybrid sports car that quickly gained celebrated status among car fans at launch, a product of collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. Coming at least in part from some of the most talented engineers in motorsports – Adrian Newey, Andy Palmer, Christian Horner, and Simon Sproule, to name but a few – it’s perhaps fitting its LEGO version is coming out in the year the LEGO Group teams up with Formula 1, despite not being an F1 product. Let’s hit the road with 42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie and see if it can live up to the legend.

LEGO Technic 42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie review 1 1024x683

42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie manages to strike a rare balance in its build, offering something detailed enough to engage an experienced LEGO builder, but accessible enough that it would suit someone wanting to try Technic for the first time. If you’re a long-time LEGO fan who has been put off by Technic pins so far, this could be the perfect starting point.

Under the brick-built hood, there’s nothing too flashy going on to help it stand out from other Technic sets. A moving differential, shifting pistons, and the classic knob on the roof to turn the car are some fairly standard and simply Technic functions, but ones that work well for this size and price point.

That’s paired with an eye-catching colour scheme and some intricately-built gullwing doors. The doors themselves are a neat bit of building work, layering together elements to create a single panel in a fiddly but ultimately seamless bit of LEGO engineering.

The final look is as authentic to the real car as can be achieved in just over 700 pieces. Admittedly, the headlights look a little janky, in part because they’re stickered and in part because the thickness of the LEGO tile at this scale makes them seem clunky rather than the indented silhouette you get on the actual car.

Aside from that scruple, the rest of the car comes together seamlessly. It’s always a wonder how a technical build can still create a car body that manages to look sleek, especially for a silhouette as iconic as the Valkyrie, yet somehow 42208 pulls it off, even when you zoom in close.

Although the bonnet opening doesn’t reveal much of the inner workings (a seemingly useless feature), it’s easy enough to flip over the compact car, so you can still enjoy all the moving functions as you like. The stickers that detail the neon stripe around the base of the car create an optical illusion throughout, mapping the curves of the real car in a way that LEGO bricks alone can’t. It’s well worth taking your time to make sure those lines match up, paying off big time for a sleek look at the end.

Comparing 42208 Aston Martin Valkyrie to other cars at this price point cements the value for money. It does everything the others do, while providing a surprisingly accessible build and an excellent display model at the end, as well as delivering on unique features with the doors.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
