LEGO Technic 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport review

LEGO Technic 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a compact supercar that packs a punch.

The LEGO Group and Bugatti have history. Big, expensive, blue history (42083 we are looking at you). So when LEGO Technic 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport arrives on shelves not as a multi-hundred-pound, coffee-table-devouring build, but as a compact little supercar with something to prove, the question is simple: can a model this small still capture the thrill, engineering and flair Technic supercars are known for?

Before diving into the LEGO version, it’s worth remembering what the Bugatti Chiron actually is. In the real world. The Chiron is what happens when a car manufacturer decides that fast simply isn’t enough. Released as the successor to the legendary Veyron, the Chiron is a quad-turbocharged W16 hypercar producing over 1,500 horsepower and capable of hitting 261mph, launching its driver from 0 to 60 quicker than it takes to say ‘how fast?’ It’s an icon of excess. Engineering as spectacle. A poster car for a generation who may never see one outside of YouTube thumbnails and billionaire Instagram feeds.

So how do you translate that level of automotive insanity into a 700-piece Technic build without losing the essence of what makes the Chiron special? With style, clever engineering, and a build that feels a lot more premium than the numbers suggest.

Inside 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport’s box are 771 parts spread across five numbered bags, along with three loose tubing elements placed beside the manual (be careful when opening the box unless you enjoy treasure hunts under the sofa). Despite the modest part count, there’s enough here to justify settling in for a decent build session.

Visually, the orange and black colour scheme lands immediately. It’s bold, racing-inspired, and distinct enough from the more traditional blue Bugatti aesthetic to feel fresh. The included sticker sheet handles the fine details – aerodynamic accents, number markings, the little aesthetic touches that bring Technic panels to life.

One of the things that separates Technic from System sets is that you simply cannot rush it. With a System set, experienced builders can slip into autopilot. With Technic? A single pin mistake three or four stages back can mean performing open-heart surgery on your build to put things right again. You’re encouraged to slow down, focus and appreciate the engineering. This set sits nicely in that territory. It’s accessible enough that younger builders or Technic newcomers won’t feel punished, yet mechanical enough that you still get a decent level of satisfaction.

The opening stages focus on the internal framework and the miniature working W16 engine. Bright internal elements and Technic pins add vibrancy to the early stages of the build, and watching the 16 pistons begin to pump up and down as you turn the axle is the kind of tactile payoff Technic does better than anything.

The working steering (operated by a cog on top rather than the wheel) is a fair compromise at this scale – and pretty much the norm. More importantly, it’s a neat mechanism that does its job well.

Once the internals lock into place, things get clever. The bonnet assembly is one of the highlights, made of several hinged and angled sub-assemblies that initially feel abstract, then snap together in a way that makes you smile. It’s the kind of build step where you pause, admire it, and think ‘oh, that’s clever’.

Techniques like this appear throughout. Small fins tucked between beams sharpen the profile. Subtle hinge work creates sloping lines. Tubing elements around the doors and spoiler not only provide accuracy but break up the visual flow in a premium way.

Gaps are present (they always are in Technic) but nothing here feels distractingly hollow. In fact, viewed as a whole, the Chiron has real display presence, with sleek, low-slung contours, aggressive front shaping, and a rear profile that looks properly muscular. Put it side by side with other Technic cars of this size and it’s punching comfortably above its weight.

This isn’t a model you build once and shelve forever. It’s fun to roll around, fun to watch the pistons fire, fun to turn the steering and see the mechanics respond. There’s a genuine pick-up-and-play factor here that many larger Technic vehicles lose once they cross into ‘too precious’ territory.

For younger Technic builders, or adults buying a gift for someone who likes cars but isn’t ready for a 3,600-piece deep dive, it’s spot on. For adult fans? It’s the perfect weeknight Technic fix. Enough of a puzzle to scratch the engineering itch over a few nights, but not too deep that it forces you to cancel every other commitment.

This sits well below the scale of 42083 Bugatti Chiron or 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, but that’s the point. Those are display pieces you build over the course of a week, with gearboxes that feel like LEGO therapy sessions. 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is more of a palette cleanser: punchy, compact, and dense in the best way. The price is roughly in the same ballpark as other similarly-sized Technic cars, so in that regard we have no complaints.

In the world of smaller Technic cars, this is one of the cleanest-looking and most thoughtfully engineered that the LEGO Group has released in a while, with plenty of creativity, no wasted steps, and a final product that feels cohesive.

LEGO Technic 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a stand-out small-scale supercar – stylish to look at, satisfying to build, and mechanically entertaining once finished. It nails the balance between involvement and accessibility, sprinkles clever design tricks throughout, and proves you don’t need thousands of pieces to deliver a premium Technic experience.

Whether you’re a veteran builder wanting something light and fun, or a younger fan taking your first steps into Technic engineering, 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is easy to recommend and surprisingly memorable. It’s a compact supercar with a big attitude.

I have more than 20 years in television production and photography and can finally put all that experience to good use by combining it with my number one passion in life, LEGO! I love all things brick-related, but the theme that really floats my boat is the original LEGO Pirates range. I currently have a LEGO wishlist that far outstretches my shelf space... and bank balance!
