LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech review

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech serves up a great little preview to what LEGO City’s Space subtheme is all about.

LEGO Space is truly back, thanks to a generous sub-theme of sets launching out of LEGO City this January, with hints of why we are so excited beginning with even the smallest offering on hand, 60428 Space Construction Mech.

Finally leaning LEGO Space away from NASA-inspired and back towards fiction, LEGO City is taking the opportunity to look at a version of LEGO life where discovery in outer space is more advanced. It has been over a decade since the LEGO Group has truly done this for a non-licensed theme, so we are all very excited for every set on offer here, including even the relatively simplistic 60428 Space Construction Mech.

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech releases on January 1, 2024 at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores and will also be available at multiple third-party stores.

— LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech build —

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech is described as a ‘futuristic toy mech suit [that] comes with hammer and claw tool arms, a minifigure pilot cockpit and big feet for exploring distant planets’, and it certainly delivers on those points, with the tools on both arms featuring prominently in its design.

It’s those arms that provide a lot of articulation and playability in the model, for their range of motion and for the particular ways in which they each interact – the hammer arm able to move forward and back, and the claw arm able to grab items pretty convincingly. Combined with the ball joints at the shoulders, hips and ankles, there is a lot of movement and play throughout this model, which is all somewhat remarkable with consideration to how the entire set contains just the 140 pieces.

This is ultimately a sign of how efficient the design to 60428 Space Construction Mech is, particularly for how all that movement comes from some specific and colour-locked parts that could otherwise have rendered the entire model too dark or grey to match with the rest of the Space subtheme sets it launches alongside.

Instead, it’s got enough black, white and orange detailing across that skeletal body to really tie it into all the other big sets, each of which it sits very nicely next to. To that end, 60428 Space Construction Mech serves well as a companion set to the other City Space sets, but importantly also works strongly as its own model, for capturing enough explorative nature within its design and purpose to make it highly poseable and – for its piece count – incredibly playable.

In short, this little mech is fun and versatile, and a real steal at under £10.

— LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech characters —

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech comes with the one minifigure, dressed in the bright light orange spacesuit design that more closely resemble a space miner of some sorts, complete with upside down-visor. It’s a design that fits in nicely with the overall theming of the set, while the minifigure likewise sits nicely within the mech to operate it. In addition is a little companion driller robot too, which feels like a second character without the expense of one.

— LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech price —

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech comes in at £8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99 which, for how it delivers a very playable and interactive little mech, is an excellent price. There is a lot more play in this set than in some that are double the price, so full credit to a smart, efficient design that keeps the price so low.

— LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech pros and cons —

LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech is a great introduction to the LEGO City Space subtheme and is a nice microcosm of what’s on offer in the bigger sets. The concept may be familiar but the application is very new, from the styling and colours through to the features and versatile movement that have been achieved here. This is a great little set at an equally great price.

For the fact LEGO City 60428 Space Construction Mech is a mini-mech, the closest comparisons are probably found in the NINJAGO range, in the form of the upcoming 71805 Jay’s Mech Battle Pack (at a similar price), or if you want to size up a bit then look to Monkie Kid, where there’s the pretty fun 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech (at double the price).
