LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery is the best 4+ LEGO set we’ve ever put together and one not to overlook in this LEGO Space subtheme.

LEGO City’s quite large and fictional foray into Space of course includes a juniorised set in the form of 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery, yet for a good few reasons this is not a 4+ set to overlook at all.

LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery will be available from January 1, 2024, as part of the LEGO City Space collection, launching at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and at various third-party retailers.

Usually with 4+ LEGO sets the parts are large, builds are incredibly junior, piece counts are low and the prices are high. Way too high. There can be interesting minifigures and printed parts in such sets, but generally these feel ‘locked’ in sets we’d otherwise not be giving the time of day.

Yet LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery comes together in such a way that it offers so much more of what can appeal to older LEGO fans, without compromising on what younger builders need as an introductory experience to the LEGO medium. That is to say, yes, this is simple in design and structure, but it doesn’t come at a ridiculous price, it still offers some nice minifigures and printed parts, and play-wise, offers a collection of builds that very much sit at home with the rest of the LEGO City Space subtheme’s January 1 wave of releases.

This is a 4+ set that perhaps benefits from that sleeker, cleaner aesthetic of futuristic space travel that this LEGO City Space line is embracing across its models, with the best example being how the main spaceship included in 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery manages to nicely mimic the appearance, shaping and design of its much larger and more intricate sister model, 60430 Interstellar Spaceship. Even so and even with it being very simplistic to build, the ship here is very much its own model that at completion is covered in wonderful contours and smooth aerodynamic lines and just begging to be picked up. It’s swooshable, is what we’re saying.

Likewise, the little command station and moveable crane with boulders both serve excellently when placed alongside any of the larger LEGO City Space sets, offering an almost minimalistic, clean and interactive area for the included minifigure space people to work around. In fact, it makes for one of the larger areas of ‘on planet’ building of any of the LEGO City Space sets launching in January, and so for a wave that is otherwise packed with white, black and orange vehicles, it becomes a much appreciated little area.

None of what you build in 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery is going to blow your creative mind, per se, but it will contribute far more substantially and credibly to the wider LEGO City Space world you are building across this range of sets than you may otherwise first expect.

LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery comes with two minifigures – a blue pilot and a green ground crew, both of which are nicely designed and interestingly come with different types of helmets to perhaps reflect their respective roles. There’s also a cute chunky green alien that is the best use of just two parts of LEGO we’ve seen in a while.

This is part of the reason why LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery stands far more credibly than a lot of 4+ sets before it – it’s a relative bargain at £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99. Usually these junior sets at such piece counts command prices around double that, yet 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery manages to offer the same amount of printed parts, large parts for younger builders, and interesting minifigures for a price that feels much fairer as an RRP.

It means that while this certainly won’t be the first LEGO City Space set many of us pick up, it will be able to stay in orbit for future consideration.

LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery delivers a build far better than any previous 4+ set before it has ever been able to, and that’s from any theme, not just City. Each of the three sub-builds adds value and play to the wider LEGO City Space subtheme, from a sleek mini spaceship to a mini command centre and working crane.

Whilst sticking to build techniques that keep this model accessible to its target audience, LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery serves up a relative hidden gem for older fans and one that more than deserves its place alongside the older models in this very exciting range of Space sets.

LEGO City 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery stands head and shoulders above any of the other 4+ sets that it is best comparable with, for being an introductory set for new LEGO builders. Other fun introductions to LEGO at this age range include 76944 T. rex Dinosaur Breakout or any number of Spider-Man sets including 10782 Hulk vs. Rhino Truck Showdown, but it should be said that both these examples offer far less for much more money. 60429 Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery really stands apart.
