LEGO Star Trek Enterprise Brick Zone Hub display case review

Summary

Brick Zone Hub attempts to boldly go where no display case has gone before, but for a premium product with a price to match, it doesn't quite manage to reach warp speed.

What We Liked

  • 5mm thick acrylic panels
  • Custom printed backdrop
  • Impact-resistant corners

What Could Be Better

  • It's not cheap
  • Unclear assembly instructions
  • No way to secure minifigures inside

Brick Zone Hub offers a premium display case for 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, but is it worth the high asking price to show off the LEGO Star Trek set?

While Star Trek fans patiently await more potential signs of life from the LEGO Icons theme, those who have already assembled their own copies of 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D will know just how much space the 3,600-piece Federation starship takes up.

The good news is that Brick Zone Hub has created a trio of premium display solutions to house the massive model, including a large acrylic display case that’s fully compatible with last year’s LEGO Star Trek build.

Measuring 71cm wide, 61cm deep and 18cm high, the display case can either be placed on a suitably-sized flat surface, freestanding (thanks to its sturdy base) or attached to a wall to show off the model vertically, and arrives flat-packed and reasonably well protected, ready for assembly.

Constructed from 5mm clear acrylic panels, the 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D display case should be fairly straightforward to construct for those who have previously tackled any IKEA furniture and comes with a set of instructions, a small screwdriver and various screws, nuts and other items to put it together.

However, none of those parts matched the two-page guide we were supplied with, requiring some frustrating back and forth to work out exactly how the display case should be correctly assembled. We did eventually manage to solve its puzzling construction method, but for a premium enclosure that's priced at £279.90 (almost as much as the LEGO Star Trek set itself), this should have been a much easier product to build.

The acrylic panels of the completed display case are held together with a number of metal cubes and screws, with the final front section attached to the rest of the frame with fairly strong magnets.

The finished display case features a striking custom printed backdrop that can be partially seen from behind 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D (although ours did have slight scratches on it), one that will definitely enhance the model, even if the title of the fan-favourite sci-fi franchise should ideally have had more spacing between its words, so that it doesn’t read ‘Startrek’.

Attaching 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D to the fully-assembled display case is a simple enough process, with an acrylic mounting plate that screws into the backdrop, with that piece then slotting into the underside of the LEGO Star Trek set, where its brick-built stand would usually be inserted.

The back of the display case also has two holes for placing the product on to a wall with a couple of nails or screws, although none are included. Additionally, there are two metal rods to help support the weight of the starship’s main dish, although ours didn’t seem to want to rest on them.

The completed Brick Zone Hub display case should certainly keep your 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D safe from scratches, damage and dust for many years to come, thanks to its fully-enclosed design and impact-resistant corners, although (ironically enough) the case itself proves to be a veritable dust magnet within seconds.

There’s no sign of panel wobble and the completed display case is extremely sturdy, with fairly easy access to the LEGO Star Trek model within, should you ever need to remove the build at any point, although it can be a bit fiddly prising open the front panel. What’s more, there’s even room inside the display case to place the set’s included minifigures and information plaque when the product is stood vertically or on a wall, even if there’s nothing to fix them to and stop them moving around.

In addition, an extra acrylic piece is included with the Brick Zone Hub display case that's intended to be put under the product when placing it on to a flat surface to protect whatever's underneath, although that was also not communicated in advance.

Those who have the cash to splash on the Brick Zone Hub display case for 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D will probably be reasonably pleased with the finished result, despite the product's confusing construction process and cost.

The Enterprise's display case falls roughly in line with what you'd expect to pay for a LEGO display case of this size from rival manufacturers, but that's not to say it's inherently affordable: at £279.90, it's a luxury purchase on top of a luxury purchase (the set itself), but those looking to invest in dust protection and in particular a way to wall-mount the Star Trek model could do worse.

For those on slightly tighter budgets, it’s worth noting that Brick Zone Hub also has two wall display frames for the LEGO Star Trek set, priced at £93.50 each (with pricier LED editions available too), which both look impressive enough but won’t stop your 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D from getting dusty.

You can find this and many more display frames and cases for a wide range of LEGO sets at Brick Zone Hub.

Our Verdict

While Brick Zone Hub's display case may look impressive enough in some of these review images, the product can be frustrating to assemble and doesn't justify its high price tag.
