LEGO DREAMZzz 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny review

Leaping out of the dream world comes 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny, a brick-built version of LEGO DREAMZzz’ floppy-eared friend.

Eager builders who have already digested the first 10 episodes of the LEGO DREAMZzz animated series will soon get the chance to construct a number of sets based on the show. Of the 11 models confirmed for release so far, 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny represents one of the most recognisable, colourful and affordable.

The 259-piece build includes both large and small-scale versions of Izzie’s favourite cuddly toy, complete with optional rocket-powered roller skates, bee stinger tail and wings, one minifigure and two smaller figures. Primarily aimed at fans of the LEGO DREAMZzz show, the set is a quick and inexpensive build that makes for a striking display piece.

— LEGO DREAMZzz 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny build —

One of the first things you’ll notice when constructing 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny is that (as with all the LEGO DREAMZzz sets) the model comes with story-led instructions. The included manual features colourful and striking artwork that has a slight manga-feel to it, with images progressing not just the building process but also providing possible play suggestions for the completed set.

The main 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny build consists of a mech-style version of Izzie’s cuddly rabbit, one that’s primarily made from bright blue, pink and yellow elements. The basic dream-crafted Bunchu figure stands over 19cm tall and features articulated ears, head, arms, wrists, legs, feet and tail. Thanks to various ball and socket joints it’s possible to place the character in a variety of dramatic poses, with the rabbit’s large flat feet providing ample stability.

For a 7+ set, 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny includes a surprising number of LEGO Technic pieces, although these elements are essential for achieving the required level of articulation. Limbs can be twisted, turned and tilted into a number of positions without Bunchu toppling over and even standing on one foot is possible – with a little patience, that is.

Once the main build has been completed, the instructions for 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny give builders the option to then construct either a pair of rocket-powered roller skates for the rabbit or a bee stinger and wings. Note that you can make one set of add-ons or the other but not both at the same time, as they each share a limited number of pieces.

Even with four wheels on the base of each roller skate, Bunchu still manages to stand up straight, with two new bright yellow flame elements providing plenty of stability. Switching to the bee stinger and wings repurposes the same pieces, allowing for the minifigure of Izzie to be placed on the rabbit’s back and control her dream creation via two handy levers.

The ability to switch between modes gives 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny plenty of longevity when it comes to both play sessions and display options. As if having a giant pink and blue rabbit in your collection wasn’t enough of a talking point, then adding crazy flaming roller skates to the model would certainly raise more than a few eyebrows.

Translating the animated look of the character into a brick-based build is not without some compromises though. For starters, 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny sees the main rabbit model recreated as a towering two-footed beast, despite the TV show version primarily spending most of its time on all fours. Likewise, some of the details of the character have been altered, with hourglass symbols removed from its paws and a printed version added to the chest area, plus the soft fluffy lines of Bunchu replaced with hard-edged pieces (but, you know, this is LEGO).

However, these are minor niggles and not ones that should affect your decision-making when it comes to potentially purchasing 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny. Even if the set were a standalone model not associated with any particular theme, the LEGO DREAMZz build is still a fun way to spend 45 minutes and you’ll also end up with a striking finished character that includes plenty of playability and display options.

71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny only includes one minifigure and that’s Izzie in her dream world avatar outfit. The character includes a number of colourful new elements such as a striking trans-blue, pink and purple hair piece, purple shoulder pads, double-sided head and torso prints and dual-moulded legs. In addition, Izzie comes with dual-moulded hourglass and sword accessories, adding even more impressive detail to the LEGO DREAMZzz set.

As well as one minifigure, 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny also features a devious Grimspawn figure, complete with repurposed LEGO Castle helmet and a large net accessory for catching hapless dreamers. The Nightmare creation includes a new printed head piece beneath its headgear, although there’s only a face on one side of the element.

Another new piece included with 71453 Izzie and Bunchu the Bunny is a small figure of Izzie’s beloved cuddly toy. The accessory matches the colour scheme of its larger self, with some impressive detail on the face and chest areas as well as pearlescent printing to round out the cute rabbit companion.
