LEGO DREAMZzz 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse review

Take to the skies with one of LEGO DREAMZzz’ best builds – and an easy way to grab the theme’s main antagonist – in 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse.

While the horn suggests that this is either an alicorn or a winged unicorn, not a pegasus, 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse is an incredibly impressive entry into LEGO DREAMZzz that is undoubtedly improved by the inclusion of the Nightmare King in an inexpensive set.

Those only getting a couple of LEGO DREAMZzz models on August 1 should consider adding 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse to their wishlist.

— LEGO DREAMZzz 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse build —

Most of the pieces in 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse go towards the pegasus itself, even though that’s arguably not an accurate term given that it has a horn. Pedantry aside, the pegasus is gorgeous with the nightmarish colour scheme lending itself excellently to the design.

The shaping of the pegasus is fantastic but relatively simple and it makes for a fun build. The horse and wings are two separate builds but work wonderfully together – at least in appearance. Functionally, the wings are loosely attached and are extremely prone to falling off. Because of the claws latching on to the body, they won’t fall too far but it’s annoying having to attach them as the build gives way under its weight.

The details on the horse use stickers apart from the eyes, but these are not necessary at all and can be left off while still achieving the same effect. The inclusion of a design on the flank is especially interesting – like a nightmarish brand left by the Nightmare King.

The pegasus isn’t easy to pose as it struggles to balance, but with a bit of patience you can figure something out. Thankfully, it looks good enough in its neutral position and is the perfect size to hold and play with.

Aside from the pegasus, this set includes a living cage, a throne and a bird transporting Zoey into battle. While the cage and the throne are both meant to feature a printed eye tile, one of these was missing from our review copy – but these mistakes happen, and the LEGO Group will no doubt be quick to send out a spare once the sets have launched, so we’re not holding it against anyone.

Anyway, these builds aren’t nearly as memorable or appealing as the pegasus, but do add to the play value of the set and each one feels like a worthy inclusion.

Unfortunately, the bird is the only item that can be rebuilt and it doesn’t take long to transform it into a pair of butterfly wings for Zoey. It’s a bit disappointing compared to other LEGO DREAMZzz sets and this could have been an opportunity to explore alternate builds for the Nightmare King’s army instead.

Admittedly, this set would have been a great opportunity for Zian – Zoey’s companion in the series – who has a similar colour scheme to this bird, but this might have raised the price considering their size.

Three minifigures and one smaller figure are included in 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse, but one of them is arguably more impressive and appealing than the rest. The entire selection is great with Zoey, Nova and Susan the Grimspawn only appearing in a few other sets. The printing is detailed and the sleeping sloth shirt is adorable. The alternate expressions are appreciated too and Susan is surprisingly intricate, but not so intimidating.

However, all three pale in comparison to the Nightmare King minifigure, which is only otherwise available in 71469 Nightmare Shark Ship. 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse is the cheapest way to pick up the character and his two new elements.

The crowned hood and shadow cape with haunting silhouettes are excellent and combined with the rest of the minifigure, this character selection is nothing short of a must-have – thanks in no small part to the Nightmare King.

At just £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99, 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse is one of the best deals across the entire first wave of LEGO DREAMZzz sets, offering an accessible method of grabbing the Nightmare King and an amazing build too.

You won’t be disappointed with this set at its full retail price and should seriously consider picking this build up at launch, especially for those not planning on purchasing 71469 Nightmare Shark Ship.

— Alternatives to LEGO DREAMZzz 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse

One of the most obvious alternatives to 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse is 71469 Nightmare Shark Ship, which also includes the Nightmare King but is far more expensive at £119.99 / $139.99 / €139.99. For a similar figure from the villainous faction from LEGO DREAMZzz, you could consider 71455 Grimkeeper the Cage Monster too, but the minifigures aren’t nearly as interesting in that set.

We’ll also highlight 31140 Magical Unicorn as a more colourful brick-built unicorn, in case you’re just looking for a buildable equine.
