LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack review

LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack is a silly set that is barely worth reviewing.

And that’s not necessarily because it’s a bad set. It’s okay, but even for how much is packed into the box, LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack is all about some minifigures that you’ll have already decided to pick up regardless of what else there is to build or indeed say about it.

— LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack build —

75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack is such a mouthful of a name and usually such long names for LEGO sets indicate one of two things – it’s either a Speed Champions set or there’s a lot going on.

Without a car in sight, we can safely say that it’s the latter here, and there is a fair bit going on inside 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack. In fact, there are four separate builds to contend with, across a speeder bike and defence post for the included Clone Troopers, and a STAP speeder and tri-droid for the Battle Droids.

Alongside there being four Clone Troopers, two Battle Droids and three Super Battle Droids, simply calling this a ‘battle pack’ rather does the actual value of the set a disservice. Think of it more like two battle packs combined for a better idea of what you get.

But unfortunately, that analogy also extends to the depth and quality of most of what you build across the four models. The tri-droid is a much-improved and well-thought-out update on something we’ve previously had in battle pack form, and is certainly the highlight and deserved centrepiece of 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack.

Yet, the speeder bike, defence post and STAP speeder are all lightweight and fairly typical builds you find in a battle pack, almost working more as window dressing than standalone models. Are we being a bit harsh on the STAP speeder, perhaps? It’s not the worst design, but for the age bracket of the set it does feel slightly held back on what we know LEGO Star Wars design can otherwise give us.

Ultimately, though, how much does a critique of the builds really matter? We’ve all made our minds up to buy this set anyway…

…because of the minifigures and droids that are included in LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack. A Shock Trooper, three regular Clone Troopers, two Battle Droids and three redesigned Super Battle Droids is a substantial and high-quality line-up to find packed into one LEGO Star Wars set. It’s not a perfect line-up for a theme turning 25 years old this year given those Battle Droids (and even the updated Super Battle Droids) are looking increasingly aged in their rigid, conjoined legs, but it’s a minor point we’ll mention in the hopes of change for the future.

— LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack price —

With consideration to a lot of other LEGO Star Wars sets of recent months and years, to find this many quality minifigures and droids in the one box and for the price to come in as it does at £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 is a rarity for the theme. And it creates this weird juxtaposition for the set to be in – on the one hand, there’s fantastic value to be found across the board, from the quantity and quality of characters included to the number of LEGO builds that really allow for a battle to take place.

Yet, three of the four builds, in particular on the clone trooper side, are so poor that in the same breath as saying 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack offers great value it also offers inconsistent and questionable quality.

— LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack pros and cons —

What does anything we say in this review matter? You know what you are accepting in picking up a copy (or 10) of LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack as it is more or less the same deal as every other battle pack to come out of LEGO Star Wars in the past 15 years or so – desirable minifigures and droids paired with compromised LEGO builds.

It’s a shame that even within a larger battle pack this remains the case, because who knows what 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack could have been otherwise, except safe to say, something more expensive.

So, to get what we really want, LEGO Star Wars continues to offer sets like 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack and we will buy it in droves, half a LEGO set or not. A silly situation for a silly LEGO set that we aren’t criticising, because we’re buying several copies of this set too…
