LEGO Marvel’s first Morbius minifigure in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius proves that it’s Morbin’ time, even if the rest of the set isn’t overly interesting.

Following in the footsteps of a particularly notable film after it gained popularity online, the release of 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius less than a year after Morbius arrived in cinemas seems unlikely to be a coincidence.

While this isn’t a review for the film, Morbius has become a well-known character, but possibly not for the reasons that the filmmakers desired. The explosion of memes for Morbius meant that a LEGO set was inevitable, though a model seven months later is quicker than we expected.

The context of the film will be hard to remove from 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius for many, but the set itself isn’t intrinsically linked to the 2022 movie. However, it has provided us with the first minifigure for the character in a relatively inexpensive set.

While the Morbius minifigure is undoubtedly a highlight of 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius, the majority of the experience comes in the form of a custom car for Miles Morales to drive. This model has nothing particularly special that separates it from other LEGO cars seen in Marvel and different themes. Ultimately, it comes across as a basic and unimpressive vehicle. While there are a few surprises, that opinion hasn’t changed too much since we finished building it.

The bonnet’s design and colour scheme matches Miles’ costume and that’s an exciting aspect of its appearance, but the car is still unlikely to appeal to older enthusiasts as much as the minifigures. However, given the set’s intended age range, there is enough play features here to keep younger fans entertained with stud shooters, the moving spoiler and the option to seat a minifigure inside. Other than the stud shooters, most of the functions in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius are integrated nicely into the build and those shooters aren’t hard to take off.

The exaggerated flames from the back of the car using large transparent elements are interesting to look at, imbuing the set with a sense of character. They’re easy to remove if you prefer, though.

Notably, other than the printed curved element with Miles’ emblem on, the car is nearly perfectly suited to match Morbius’s costume too. The colour scheme works well for both included minifigures, adding a versatile twist to the set, whether intentional by the designers or not. (You have to imagine it was intentional, though.)

There’s little doubt that 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius‘s appeal is in some part the exclusive Morbius minifigure and it may be easy to overlook the included car. But while it’s nothing special, the build in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius is good enough for its intended purpose.

The highlight of 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius is its minifigures, specifically one of the minifigures mentioned in the set name. While it’s not Miles Morales, the included Spider-Man minifigure is fine for the price of the model with the minimum amount of printing necessary for the character.

Matching that level of printing, but in an entirely new character, is Morbius. Making his debut following one of the most memorable movies of 2022, the first minifigure for the iconic Marvel character is based on his comic design.

The choice of hairpiece works well for this minifigure, though it’s not one that we had considered for the character before seeing it used. The level of detail in the minifigure is basic, but with the design of Morbius in the comics, nothing more is needed.

The presence of an alternate, angrier expression is appreciated, but it’s the accessories that may be the most interesting part of the set. While 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius isn’t based on Morbius (the film), the design team have managed to include a reference to the 2022 movie with two included vials.

Being a vampire, Morbius has an attachment to blood. While it’s not stated in the description of the set, it seems likely that this is what the red vial is meant to represent. However, in the film (and comics) he manages to stave off his cravings with an artificial alternative. A purple vial is also included in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius and we’d like to think it’s a tongue-in-cheek reference to the movie from the designers.

76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius retails for £19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99 for 220 pieces and two minifigures. Considering the volume of the build, the level of value feels fine, but not at all generous. A small section of a city block to pose one of the minifigures could have been good but ultimately, the set includes only the car, the minifigures and a few accessories.

Those wanting the Morbius minifigure may want to wait for a sale or another suitable offer but for the RRP, 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius is just fine, and nothing more.

76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius has a desirable minifigure in a set that just manages to be good enough to warrant a purchase.

Three months following its release, 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius doesn’t seem to be hard to find. so you may be sage to wait for a sale or offer to grab the exclusive Morbius minifigure, or the rest of the rather basic build. However, those interested in play features may find more to love in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius, warranting a swifter purchase.

The Morbius movie may not have had the most successful history at the box office, reaching $167.5 million worldwide at the time of writing, but it has managed to at least grant us the first Morbius minifigure. That is unless this is all coincidence, which seems unlikely so close to the film’s release and with the multi-year development process of LEGO sets. More likely is that it’s simply Morbin’ time for LEGO Marvel.
