LEGO 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City officially revealed

The LEGO Group has officially revealed 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, which is swooping into stores next month to celebrate Batman’s 85th anniversary.

A sort of LEGO Art set in disguise, 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City is a tribute to the seminal ‘90s show Batman: The Animated Series. The 4,210-piece set recreates the sprawling skyline in microscale, from Arkham Asylum and Gotham City Police Station to Joker’s Amusement Area and Gotham City Court, and includes four all-new minifigures on a separate display stand: Batman, Catwoman, Joker and Harley Quinn.

This isn’t a flat mosaic, though. Instead, it’s built in the same design language as 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night and 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave, using three dimensions to allow the image to burst from its canvas. That allows for sections of the skyline to pull away to reveal hidden secrets, from the interior of Wayne Manor and the Batcave to Gotham Opera House and the police station.

Other details include a tiny representation of the Batmobile, the iconic Bat-signal, stickered tiles with microscopic depictions of classic Batman heroes and villains (more than are included in the set as minifigures), and plenty more Easter eggs that will probably only be discovered on building the model. Once it’s done, you can pop it on a shelf or – like the LEGO Art sets – hang it on a wall.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
