LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery review

Owls, a spider, and an admittedly impressive tower – but there’s not a lot else to write home about in LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery.

Marking the first time that the LEGO Group has dedicated a set to the owlery, with previous ones appearing alongside other structures, 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery captures the rocky height of the owls’ home. In the movies, it’s located apart from the rest of the school, requiring a little walk if students want to go and see their feathered friends.

Indeed, there are plenty of owls to get to know in LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery, so read on to find out what we made of their home.

— Where to buy LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery

LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery is available from March 1, 2024 for £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99. You’ll find it at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores, as well as through third-party retailers.

— LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery build —

If you’re in the market for a way to get your hands on a bunch of owls, then you’re in luck; 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery does what it says on the tin when it comes to providing a fun build packed full of owls and owl references. Owls in flight, owls in windows, and even a tiny owl that we’re headcanoning as Pigwidgeon (even if he didn’t appear in the movies).

However, beyond that the build itself is fairly lacklustre. The tower looks nice enough from the outside, but without much flair on the design. It’s firmly placed in one moment in time, a snowy day when Harry runs into Cho Chang on the stairway to the owlery. The snow-capped turrets and presence of Harry and Cho confirm that, meaning it’s hard to imagine the set at any other time, rather limiting play options.

The details of the interior, something that LEGO Harry Potter usually excels at with its Hogwarts-based sets, are rather underwhelming. A few letters are dotted around on shelves, seemingly about to be delivered and the ground floor has a few owl-related Easter eggs, like bird cookies to feed to pets on a visit.

One nice touch on the interior is having a completely tan owl that acts as a bird-shaped statue on one of the levels, a nice bit of artwork for the owls to look at before sweeping about their days, we like to imagine.

The set’s saving grace is its exterior. Undeniably, from afar 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery does strike quite an impressive silhouette and the rocky outcrop it’s based on is authentic to its appearance in the movies. The snowy trees and turrets make for a pleasing contrast with the warm tones of tan, grey and white that make up the tower itself. Aesthetically, it’s a welcome model to the LEGO Harry Potter theme, even if the interior is lacking.

— LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery minifigures —

The presence of Cho and Harry means you can recreate easily one of the funniest moments from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, (doyouwannagototheballwimme?) and the minifigures are impressively accurate to how the actors appear on screen. That means Harry is complete with his shaggy teenage hair paired with adult minifigure legs.

A third wheel has also been added to Harry’s would-be romantic moment with the presence of Argus Filch. While seemingly random, the caretaker’s presence does account for the majority of the interior details that we did get, with most of them centring around owl care and maintenance. He has the same torso and bald head as when he appeared in 2022’s 76402 Hogwarts: Dumbledore’s Office but with plain brown legs, rather than printed.

— LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery price —

For what 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery is, you might expect a little more detail on what is a pretty simple build for £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99. A handful more pieces offering some movie references or classic LEGO humour to the build would have gone a long way. As it stands, you’re largely paying for the admittedly cool tower structure and silhouette – and a lot of owls, of course.

— 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery pros and cons —

76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery does deliver on what it promises: owls, a tower to house them in, and enough minifigures to act out stories around them. However, once you take a look past the snowy towers and varied owl figures, the details are lacking for a set of this size and price.

— Alternatives to LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery —

If you’re in the market for a little sliver of Hogwarts Castle for less than £50, consider paying £5 more than 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery to get your hands on 76413 Hogwarts: Room of Requirement. The interior is far more detailed and has far more interactive features than 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery, from a hidden diadem to a roaring orange snake made from Fiendfyre.

However, if all you’re looking for is a magical tower, then your best bet is to head to another theme: LEGO DREAMZzz 71477 The Sandman’s Tower. The white and gold is much prettier than Hogwarts’ standard colours and the internal features are also much more appealing to look at. It might set you back twice as much, but you get twice as much for it, with some brick-built fantastical beasts and some truly excellent minifigures to boot.

The only time Cho and Harry are in the owlery in the books is in Order of the Phoenix when they are interrupted by Filch. His inclusion is more for the book readers than the movie fans.
