LEGO Speed Champions 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione review

LEGO Speed Champions’ March 2023 wave is one of its strongest yet, but 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione is unfortunately the weakest of the lot.

As intimidating as that introduction might seem, we want to emphasise just how strong this new selection of LEGO Speed Champions is. It’s the superb quality and detail of these models that unfortunately showcase the flaws of 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione in comparison. It’s exceedingly simple when stacked up next to any other model in this new wave, more on par with previous ranges of LEGO Speed Champions instead.

The set does have its strengths, especially in areas that aren’t usually a priority for the LEGO Speed Champions design team – just try not to compare it to any of the other new vehicle builds out on March 1, 2023.

— LEGO Speed Champions 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione build —

At first glance, 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione is a lot more simple than every other LEGO Speed Champions set, relying mostly on traditional Speed Champions techniques to capture the shape of the real car, which it does excellently. There was no need for anything more in this build to accurately recreate the real Ferrari 812 Competizione, but against the rest of this new wave it unfortunately looks far too simplistic.

At second glance, the whole vehicle being at a slight angle is an interesting touch that you won’t notice at first. Looking beneath 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione, there is one especially notable section at the back, where stud shooters are used for the exhausts and perfectly contained within a subassembly at just the right angle. The piece used to complete the firing mechanism in these shooters is also included, presumably because LEGO policy is to always include one with the other – or because the Speed Champions team is hoping you’ll find a way to incorporate James Bond-style gadgetry into the Ferrari.

Keeping to the back, two standard bricks on both ends of the rear are printed with grey and black detailing. However, on a different face of the same piece you need to apply a sticker. This trend continues throughout 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione and it’s another confusing aspect of the set.

Ideally, all or at least more of the designs would have been printed, but ultimately stickers are in nearly every LEGO Speed Champions set, just as they are in this car, and longtime fans are likely to be used to them by now. Keep a brick separator or another thin tool like the included wrench handy to apply them.

The exterior is far more important for a LEGO Speed Champions set than the interior and most of the time the inside of the brick-built cars can feel sparse in comparison, but you’re not going to see the inside a lot anyway. All that said, one of the biggest strengths of 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione is its surprisingly detailed interior space.

With a sticker for the gear stick, two printed headrests with the Ferrari logo and a curved brick for the dashboard, it’s an unexpected sight but a welcome one in a good set that still falls short compared to the lofty heights that the rest of this new wave reaches.

To put it simply, you don’t buy most LEGO Speed Champions sets for the minifigures, unless it’s part of the new film-inspired range with the first James Bond or Fast & Furious minifigures. However, that’s still a fresh concept for LEGO Speed Champions and it doesn’t change the fact that the included minifigures mostly exist to sit in the cars and look presentable.

That’s exactly what the driver in 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione does, with a themed shirt and the basic accessories of a helmet and wrench. It’s likely to be a forgettable minifigure otherwise, but at least the torso print will be useful for custom minifigures of Ferrari fans.

To our surprise, it appears to be a new and exclusive torso, which is appreciated considering that any of the other Ferrari minifigure designs could have been used to the same effect in 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione.

— LEGO Speed Champions 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione price —

It’s business as usual for 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione as the set falls under the standard LEGO Speed Champions price of £19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99 per single car.

Considering that this took us over 40 minutes to build, this continues to be an excellent price point for the theme. It’s not too expensive, but gives the model a good amount of budget for the necessary details, even if more printed pieces would be appreciated.

— LEGO Speed Champions 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione and cons —

As much as we enjoy 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione, it’s still undoubtedly the weakest link in an incredibly strong chain of new LEGO Speed Champions sets. We recommend picking it up, but after 76915 Pagani Utopia, 76916 Porsche 963 and 76918 McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM.

The build is detailed but still too simple in comparison to the other upcoming sets, and there are some confusing aspects to the model, even though they don’t take away anything from the experience. Almost everything in 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione works in the set’s favour and alone it’s a fantastic creation. It’s unfortunate that it just so happens to be launching in the same wave as some especially incredible LEGO Speed Champions models.

Don’t let that dissuade you from picking it up entirely: we’d just recommend prioritising the rest of the latest selection over this set. That said, 76914 Ferrari 812 Competizione is another good design from the LEGO Speed Champions design team and you won’t be disappointed with it in isolation.
