LEGO Jurassic World 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus review

LEGO Jurassic World’s ambitious 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus embraces brick-built dinosaurs with a set that’s both adorable and affordable.

LEGO Jurassic World 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus offers a pint-sized depiction of baby Bumpy from the Camp Cretaceous series, packing a lot into a small and relatively inexpensive model. The Ankylosaurus character has been depicted before in 76939 Stygimoloch Dinosaur Escape, but at minifigure-scale. 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus allows the designers to capture more specific details and functions, honing in on Bumpy’s personality.

76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus arrives just after the sequel series to the animated Camp Cretaceous show and it’s far from just timing that is on this set’s side.

— LEGO Jurassic World 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus build —

As made clear by the set name, 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus focuses almost entirely on the infant Ankylosaurus and the sizeable figure has an impressive level of articulation for all manner of poses. Considering Bumpy’s stature and the size of the set, four moving legs, a head and a tail are an adequate amount of moving parts.

While the head and tail can only move up and down, the legs use common joint elements for as much movement as possible. Despite only featuring one joint each, the legs can be moved into convincing poses including a run and a walk. Note that the figure can only be posed on its hind legs for a second before falling due to its weight, but watching Bumpy flop over after rearing up is pretty funny.

76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus‘ build is especially interesting from start to finish and only slightly repetitive when it comes to the legs. The combination of shaping and a unique take on a simplistic function helps keep the model engaging from start to finish.

Bumpy’s head and tail are connected and held in place using a turntable on the bottom and a single stud on top, which allows them to move simultaneously. The result is a fun effect but one that won’t hold your attention for long, thanks in no small part to just how limited the range of movement is. The width of Bumpy’s body doesn’t allow for a wider range of motion to swing the tail and head more than a few centimetres to the left and right.

Bumpy’s figure is accompanied in 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus by four non-edible LEGO plants for the character to snack on. These only use a handful of pieces but are convincing enough, though fitting any of them in Bumpy’s mouth and making them stay there will provide a challenge. Thankfully, their small part usage means that they don’t take away from the overall experience, but add to it in a small way.

Overall, the model presents an interesting case for brick-built dinosaurs in LEGO Jurassic World, in the right situation, and this could kick-start an interesting buildable baby dinosaur collection.

— LEGO Jurassic World 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus price —

76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus is surprisingly affordable at £19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99. While no minifigures are featured, one wouldn’t make much sense in a set of this scale and thankfully Ben is available in another upcoming LEGO Jurassic World set.

With 358 pieces in the box – two of which are printed – there are many reasons to give 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus a go next month, whether you’re a dinosaur fan or a Camp Cretaceous enthusiast.
