LEGO Art 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss officially revealed

The largest LEGO Art Masterpiece set to date has been officially revealed in the 4,000-piece shape of 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss.

The LEGO Art theme has revealed its next brick-built painting based on an iconic original, with 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss arriving next month. Priced at £269.99 / $299.99 / €299.99, the model boasts a total of 4,000 pieces, with LEGO Insiders getting early access to the build on August 1, followed by wider availability for all from August 4.

31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss is the largest LEGO Art Masterpiece set to date, easily besting the 3,179-piece count of the recent 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies. The striking 18+ model offers up a unique three-dimensional interpretation of the Austrian artist’s celebrated creation and was developed in partnership with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, where the original painting is permanently displayed.

The upcoming LEGO Art set has been recreated using layered textures and numerous details to reflect Klimt’s signature style and the Vienna Secession movement, and features decorated circles, spirals, flowers and multiple metallic gold elements, as well as a printed tile bearing the artist’s signature.

“Recreating Klimt’s The Kiss in LEGO bricks was a unique creative challenge,” said LEGO Master Model Designer Milan Madge, “requiring us to capture its rich textures, golden tones, and intricate detail while honouring the original masterpiece.

"By combining golden LEGO elements with specially decorated pieces, we were able to recreate the artwork’s distinctive shades and textures in a building experience that celebrates its extraordinary beauty.”

As with previous LEGO Art sets, the release of 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss will be accompanied by a special podcast episode for builders to listen to while assembling the model, one that features Milan and Stephanie Auer, Curator of 19th- and 20th-Century Art at the Belvedere Museum.

“Working as a curator for the adaptation of Klimt’s The Kiss into a LEGO Art set was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Stephanie. “Together with Milan Madge, we had extensive discussions about Gustav Klimt’s symbolism, ornamentation, and artistic techniques, as well as how these could be represented using LEGO bricks.

"Distinctive features such as the flatness and composition were carefully translated into LEGO bricks – always with the goal of staying true to the spirit of the original work.”
