LEGO artist recreates Lake District with £4,000 of bricks

Artist Jon Tordoff is on a mission to recreate England’s Lake District at a small scale in a massive build with over £4,000 contributed so far.

The model, which was recently on display at the Belper library, is made up of over 200,000 pieces and started with Buttermere and Crummock Water. The recreation now includes Ennerdale, Honister, Borrowdale and Derwentwater. It covers over 9 square metres of the Lake District, at a small, but detailed scale.

“The original idea is probably going back to the first lockdown,” said Tordoff in an interview with the BBC. “I just happened to pick the smallest bit of LEGO you can get off the floor and thought that if that was classed as 10 metres high, that’s the difference between the contour lines on the OS maps and could you actually create a convincing landscape out of square things.”

“The scale is one to 3,125 and that makes Windermere 19 foot long. You don’t think about those things at the start of a project, that’s a problem to work out later.”

You can support the project by donating to Tordoff’s fundraising page. This recreation happens to time well with the reveal and upcoming release of 21338 A-Frame Cabin on February 1, 2023, which similarly depicts a fan-inspired home in the countryside, like that of the cottages in the Lake District.
