LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – everything we know so far

From playable characters to exclusive unlock codes, here’s everything we know so far about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, TT Games’ latest take on the Caped Crusader.

Announced during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live show, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is TT Games’ fifth title inspired by DC Comics, following LEGO Batman: The Videogame, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham and LEGO DC Super-Villains. There’s a lot to take in beyond just the debut trailer, so here’s everything you need to know about the Dark Knight’s next adventure.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight trailer

If you haven’t yet checked out the initial trailer for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, it’s as good a place to start as any.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight story

Publisher WB Games says LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will draw on ‘iconic moments from the Caped Crusader’s 86-year history in film, television, comic books, and games’, and the trailer gives us a brief taste of what to expect from its story. There are references to and characters from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Tim Burton’s Batman movies and even Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

It sounds like the game will fuse all these various inspirations into a quasi-original story, however, which will see players follow Bruce Wayne from ‘origin to legend’. Expect TT Games’ usual LEGO humour throughout.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight gameplay

From the initial gameplay trailer and footage revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, it looks like LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will hew pretty closely to TT Games’ traditional LEGO video game formula. That means beating up baddies, collecting studs, traversing levels and solving puzzles. The main difference this time round is in the combat system, which seems to take inspiration from Rocksteady Games’ Batman: Arkham series.

As well as attack combos, counters and animated takedowns, each character also has unique gear to defeat enemies. Batman can use Batarangs to distract bad guys, Catwoman can reel them in with her whip, and Jim Gordon can, erm, spray them with foam.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight playable characters

Speaking of playable characters: don’t expect a roster on the level of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which pulled in hundreds of characters from across all nine Star Wars movies (and beyond). In fact, the game’s official website states it will only have seven playable characters, including Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Jim Gordon and Talia al Ghul.

That’s a far cry from previous LEGO Batman games, which have allowed players to revisit levels and explore the open world as not only the heroes, but the villains, too. The question remains whether LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will allow us to play as the Joker, Harley Quinn, Bane, et al…

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight open world Gotham

Like previous LEGO Batman games, Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature an open-world Gotham for players to explore, complete with challenges, puzzles and crimes to encounter along the way. Specific locations mentioned so far include Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower and Gotham Botanical Gardens. You’ll also be able to drive a variety of Batmobiles and Batcycles around the open world.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight difficulty levels

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is further tweaking the tried and tested TT Games formula by introducing difficulty levels. ‘Caped Crusader’ will offer a tougher challenge over the regular game, while ‘Dark Knight’ mode kicks things up another notch for players seeking an even more demanding experience. There’s no word yet on the specific differences between difficulty levels, however.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight customisation

As well as the open-world Gotham, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will give players the chance to explore the Batcave – and customise it to your liking, displaying your choice of Batsuits, Bat-vehicles and more. WB Games has made no mention of a character customiser yet, though…

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight multiplayer

Following in the footsteps of previous TT Games titles, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature only local co-operative multiplayer for up to two players. That means you won’t be able to play online with friends.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight pre-order bonus

WB Games has yet to confirm whether LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature any pre-order bonuses, either digital or physical. Previous TT Games efforts have typically included physical LEGO minifigures, such as Blue Milk Luke with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, so there’s a chance we could see something similar this time round. All bets are off at the moment though.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Golden Age Batsuit code

While we don’t have news of any pre-order bonuses yet, you’ll be able to access an exclusive in-game Golden Age Batsuit by signing up for a WB Games account. You’ll presumably receive the code when signing into your account on launching the game, but the exact process is still to be confirmed. Existing account members will be eligible for the code too.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight DLC

WB Games says LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight won’t feature microtransactions or ‘consumable in-game purchases’, but hasn’t explicitly ruled out the possibility of additional downloadable content, such as new levels or characters. For context, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s post-game content consisted exclusively of bonus character packs.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight release date

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will hit consoles and PC in 2026. Warner Bros. Games has not shared a more concrete release date yet, presumably to avoid the frequent delays that occurred with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight platforms

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games store). It’s not coming to last-gen consoles such as PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
