LEGO Batman Forever Batmobile was ‘a model full of challenges’

The designer behind 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile has reflected on the many challenges he had to overcome when it came to creating the LEGO DC set.

Batman Forever will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with the movie having been released way back in 1995. To mark that special occasion, fans will soon be able to pick up 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile, a 909-piece version of the Dark Knight’s striking vehicle from the film, with the LEGO set due to launch on August 1.

Ahead of the model’s arrival, Brick Fanatics had the opportunity to chat to 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile’s designer at a recent roundtable interview. Topics under discussion with Mark Stafford included why creating the build was such a challenge, how the vehicle’s unique organic aesthetic came to be and why employing some unusual pieces helped solve structural issues with the car.

“This was me attempting to build those ribs on the sides to make sure that all of this was possible and getting all of the shaping of the vehicle in there.” Mark explained while holding up the early sketch model of 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile below.

“It’s also when I realized just how cool this is without the tail fin on it. It’s a really nicely-shaped car, but this was when I was trying to keep those strips at the side and the really intricate, Geiger-esque feeling of the car design, the bioorganic way of doing the car design.”

That thinking and visual approach represented the most intensive part of the creative process when it came to the LEGO DC set, ultimately allowing Mark to crack the stylised look of 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile.

“The hardest challenge all the way through was making sure that the bioorganic look came through,” said the designer, revealing another sketch model in his possession. “I’ve got a much later version of it here, where you can see the front is still like that. And here still is a LEGO leaf element, which I was attempting to do the front with, but as soon as you see that, you think ‘LEGO leaf in black’. So a lot of this had to change over time as we went on.”

One of those changes including utilising unusual LEGO elements in order to get the sketch models to work, including using some pieces that were replaced with blocked hinges at the top of the wheel arches when it came to the final version of 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile.

“For at least four days of designing this model,” Mark pointed out, “the support for the top of the wheel arch was actually made with LEGO roller skates. I just realised that the back of the roller skate is the same height as this hinge piece.”

“But that’s one of the things with building or designing a LEGO model, is the amount of iterations of going through and changing things every time you do a different version of it. I don’t know why I didn’t think of the hinge earlier on, but I was trying to use that roller skate  for support. But then the other end of the roller skate is a different shape and it was causing me all sorts of nightmares!”

76304 Batman Forever Batmobile is available to pre-order now for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 and the LEGO DC set will be released on August 1, 2025.
