LEGO Batman movie may have inspired the 2026 game

The latest news for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has revealed how much inspiration the game takes from Batman’s LEGO movie.

Batgirl has been the focus of the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight promotion over the past week, culminating in a proper look at the character’s appearance in-game this weekend. The info card for the character also features a view of Barbara Gordon, with a hairstyle that LEGO fans should recognise.

It’s not just the character’s skin colour that is reminiscent of Barbara’s appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie, but her hair is also the same pair of elements that are used in her civilian and hero outfits. Combined with the skin colour, it’s a clear sign that Barbara’s appearance in the game is heavily inspired by The LEGO Batman Movie.

The only other appearance of Barbara Gordon with darker skin is in 2024’s Batman: Caped Crusader animated series. Given the use of this specific hair piece, it’s more likely that the LEGO film was the inspiration.

Other characters appearing in the game don’t take quite as clear an inspiration from The LEGO Batman Movie. Jim Gordon’s appearance has a similarly darker skin tone, but that aligns closely with his appearance in The Batman, too.

It’s good to see that the LEGO movie is being referenced in some way, though the game will still have its own identity by taking cues from across Batman’s media portfolio. Unfortunately, any outfits or Batmobiles explicitly based on the LEGO film have yet to be confirmed. Non-LEGO movies and series seem to be the main focus of the upcoming title, as well as the original LEGO Batman game.

You can look forward to playing LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight from the revised release date of May 22, 2026, or three days earlier for deluxe edition owners. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
