LEGO boosts capacity by 30% in Hungary site expansion

The LEGO Group has increased production capacity by 30% with its expansion of the Hungarian manufacturing site after a two-year investment.

The LEGO Group opened its expansion to the manufacturing site in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, following a two-year investment programme that saw the production capacity increase by 30% to meet ‘strong demand’ for its products. The moulding hall now houses more than 1,000 injection moulding machines, and the number of packaging lines has increased by one third to a total of 73. Those developments mean that more LEGO pieces and sets can be produced to feed demand in Europe and around the world.

“Today marks a very important milestone for us as we proudly celebrate the successful completion of the expansion of our factory in Hungary,” said the CEO of the LEGO Group, Niels B Christiansen. “The site reflects our commitment to sustainability, and through increased manufacturing capacity we will be able to bring more LEGO® play to more children and fans in Europe and around the world.”

During the two-year expansion, the factory grew to support 300 new jobs, bringing the total number of employees to over 4,300 and making it one of the largest employers in the local region. Those employees work in a number of manufacturing fields, including moulding, decoration, assembly, packing, and warehousing.

The expansion also saw the LEGO Group invest in the site’s sustainability with a geothermal heating system, in a step towards heating the factory using renewable sources. In addition, the site houses three solar parks with more than 24,000 solar panels between them.

“We are very proud of the sustainability programmes we have implemented, including being the first in this region of Hungary to harness the power of geothermal energy to this scale in an industrial setting,” said Chresten Bruun, SVP of EMEA Manufacturing and General Manager of LEGO Manufacturing Kft. “We are deeply grateful for the support of our many partners who are helping us on our ambition to further reduce our environmental impact. We remain committed to the region, both as a major employer and an active player in the local community.”

New warehouse and operations areas have also been added, making it the second-largest LEGO factory worldwide. It has doubled in size since it opened in 2014, hitting 262,000 square metres.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
