LEGO Brick Like This is pure carnage when you turn up the heat
Asmodee’s latest LEGO party game Brick Like This is fun, light and breezy – but throw in the challenge cards and it becomes pure carnage.
The LEGO Group and Asmodee’s partnership to produce new brick-based board and party games has come up trumps again with Brick Like This, a team-based building game that riffs on familiar LEGO mechanics and then turns the dial up to 11.

The premise is simple: one person (the instructor) describes a two-dimensional LEGO model to their partner (the builder), who must then assemble it from the included palette of elements. Each team of two races to complete their build first, and then the remaining teams have 30 seconds to finish theirs. If the fastest team have completed it accurately, they get the points.

For anyone even vaguely familiar with LEGO bricks this starts off pretty easy, but the accessibility floor is well-positioned to ensure everyone can join in the fun no matter their age or experience level. There are four difficulty levels for the builds, ranging in points value from five to eight, and you’ll soon develop the fastest way of communicating particular pieces: a ‘twoer’ is much quicker than ‘a 1×2 brick’, for example.

The pieces are all pretty basic too which helps, but more experienced LEGO fans may find the novelty wearing off quick… if it wasn’t for the included challenge cards. These are split between three difficulty levels and each add an extra wrinkle to the gameplay. They’ll ease you in with challenges like ‘the model must contain a maximum of four colours’ or ‘the instructor may not say ‘on’’. But flip over a level-three challenge and the heat really ramps up.

For example: the builder may not use their thumbs. The builder must hide the model under the table so no-one can see it. Or our favourite: the instructor may not speak at all. The basic rules of the game prevent the instructor from pointing or touching the bricks, so you can imagine the fun of trying to communicate in those circumstances. (There’s a lot of frantic eyebrow-raising.)
What starts out as a relatively light game quickly descends into mayhem when the tougher challenge cards are introduced – especially when you’re racing against other teams – but it’s that brilliant kind of carnage the best party games bring out of their players. It’s short and sweet and not too deep, which feels like the perfect game for the festive period…
