LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 submission window closes

The submission window for Series 2 of the BrickLink Designer Program has now closed, with voting for the next round of fan-designed LEGO sets due to begin next week.

Representing a more direct approach to getting your models in the hands of the masses than LEGO Ideas, the BrickLink Designer Program allows fans to crowdfund their favourite designs. That’s basically the final stage of the process, though: first, builders must submit their projects and allow the community and the LEGO Group to determine which five designs will be available to crowdfund.

That’s first by way of a public vote, which for Series 2 of the BrickLink Designer Program runs from June 12 to 30. All votes cast will influence the program’s judges alongside its internal selection criteria, so while the number of votes won’t necessarily correlate to the sets ultimately chosen, it will apparently still make at least some difference.

The BrickLink team will then spend most of July and August combing through all the submissions to check for their brand fit, the building experience they’ll offer, and which potential sets have gone over best with BrickLink members. We’ll find out the results – and the final five designs – on August 23. The LEGO Group (which owns BrickLink) will then collaborate with the winning designers to ready their models for production.

That part of the process takes some time, so crowdfunding won’t actually begin until June 2024. All sets that receive more than 3,000 pre-orders (with a maximum of 20,000 available per set) will enter production, with a limit of two copies of each set per household. Orders will apparently be ready to ship around six months after pre-ordering, so at the tail end of 2024.

Crowdfunding for the five Series 1 designs will happen first, in February 2024. Don’t worry if you missed the submission window for Series 2, though: if the LEGO Group keeps to the same schedule going forward, Series 3 of the BrickLink Designer Program will presumably begin in late August or early September.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
