LEGO Chinese New Year set may hint at future Classic Space minifigure

A future Classic Space minifigure colour may well have been revealed as an Easter egg in today’s announcement of LEGO 80116 Trotting Lantern.

The LEGO Group today revealed details of three Chinese New Year sets that are due to launch on January 1, 2025. 80116 Trotting Lantern, 80117 Good Fortune and 40813 Lucky Cat will all arrive on LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores on that date, with two of the builds celebrating the Year of the Snake.

Taking a closer look at the images of 80116 Trotting Lantern reveals that not only is the model packed with plenty of colour and detail, but that an Easter egg has also been snuck in there that may hint at the colour of a future Classic Space minifigure.

A small brick built decorations stall included with 80116 Trotting Lantern features an image of two minifigures floating in the sky, printed on what looks to be a transparent window piece. One of those appears to be a light blue (or dark azure) Classic Space minifigure, which was one of five options offered up in a recent LEGO Ideas fan vote.

Back in May 2024, the LEGO Ideas team asked fans to choose a new Classic Space minifigure colour that would accompany Rob Vangansewinkel’s winning Minifigure Prize Machine design. Votes could be cast for bright bluish green, bright yellowish green, reddish violet, warm gold and dark azure, with the latter a close match for the minifigure shown in 80116 Trotting Lantern.

While the results of the LEGO Ideas fan vote have still yet to be revealed, the inclusion of what may be the dark azure Classic Space minifigure in the upcoming Chinese New Year set might just hint as to which option proved to be the most popular.

In addition, the designer behind 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion also recently revealed that he tried to get a light bluish grey Classic Space helmet as a bust in the build, but that the allocated budget for the LEGO Marvel set wouldn’t apparently allow for the creation of such a coloured piece.

80116 Trotting Lantern will be released on January 1, 2025, alongside 80117 Good Fortune and 40813 Lucky Cat, with full confirmed details listed below.
