LEGO City’s biggest set ever rumoured for 2023

An initial list of rumoured LEGO City sets on the way in 2023 includes what would be the theme’s biggest-ever product – by a margin of almost 500 pieces.

To date, the biggest LEGO City set of all time is 2015’s 60097 City Square, a hodgepodge of buildings, vehicles and minifigures comprised of 1,683 pieces. Next down the list is 2020’s 60271 Main Square – also the theme’s most expensive set to date – which uses 1,517 bricks within a similar framework of separate builds. But blowing beyond both of those in 2023 will apparently be 60380 Urban Center, a set that’s rumoured to include 2,010 pieces.

That’s according to a list of 13 new LEGO City 2023 sets that emerged earlier this week, none of which – as of yet – have a release date. Based on previous release schedules for one of the LEGO Group’s core themes, though, it’s fairly reasonable to expect these models (which also include the return of the Arctic and Deep Sea Explorers subthemes) to launch in June.

Looking at its rumoured product name alone, which may not be final, 60380 Urban Center sounds like it’s going to take a similar approach to 60097 City Square and 60271 Main Square. That means we’re most likely looking at a mix of buildings – whether residential, commercial or municipal – vehicles like cars, a tram and probably a helicopter, and potentially scenic locations like a park.

That’s all just speculation at the moment, but it would make sense based on what we’ve seen before from the evergreen theme. On the other hand, all bets are pretty much off the table for LEGO City in 2023, which is now under the supervision of LEGO Monkie Kid creator Simon Lucas. We’re already seeing the results of that change in direction through sets like 60372 Police Training Academy, and 60380 Urban Center could similarly redefine the theme’s approach to its flagship models.

If nothing else, its sheer size is rewriting the rulebook for LEGO City – if it exists at all, of course. For now, it’s just a rumour, so take it with the customary pinch of salt.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
