LEGO Classic Space gift-with-purchase rumoured for May 2024

A brand new LEGO Classic Space gift-with-purchase is rumoured to be on the way next month, along with an astronaut in a colour that’s only appeared once before.

Instagram user fateful_lego reports that 40687 Alien Space Diner will be free with qualifying purchases from May 14, 2024. The GWP is said to include 239 pieces, which together constitute a space-themed diner with a UFO, small rocket and stars, topped off with a sign with a sticker that reads ‘DINER’. That sounds pretty cool already, but the cherry on the cake is the character selection.

40687 Alien Space Diner will apparently include a buildable three-eyed alien chef and two Classic Space astronauts: one in white and one in orange. The former is one of the easier retro space minifigures to come by – two can be found in 2022’s 10497 Galaxy Explorer alone – but the orange Classic Space astronaut has only ever appeared as a bonus gift in the 2020 book LEGO Minifigure: A Visual History New Edition.

A single orange LEGO Classic Space astronaut now fetches anywhere from £13 on BrickLink, which makes it one of the pricier colourways to collect. It’s not the most expensive – that would probably be purple, which can only be assembled from across multiple different sets and minifigures, or perhaps grey, the helmet for which is incredibly hard to come by – but it does add immediate value to 40687 Alien Space Diner.

The LEGO Group is going all-in on space as a concept this year across multiple themes, including City, Friends, DREAMZzz, Technic and Minifigures. And if this gift-with-purchase emerges as rumoured (and remember, nothing is confirmed until officially revealed by the LEGO Group), it would only be the latest in a string of LEGO Classic Space gifts-with-purchase – including February’s 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad, the first LEGO 2024 set to assume the aesthetic of Classic Space.
