LEGO CMF Series 27 was originally designed for ill-fated VIDIYO theme
One minifigure from LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71048 Series 27 was originally designed for the long-retired VIIDYO theme.
71048 Series 27’s Jetpack Racer features a helmet that was seemingly originally designed for LEGO VIDIYO, according to development screenshots shared by PenPlays on X. The image shows the same helmet mold, with a different slogan printed on the forehead and alternate colours.
The helmet features a raised section on the top of the helmet, along with a transparent visor that extends around the side of the helmet, rather than just the front. It’s a unique design that’s well worth seeing the light of the day, so minifigure collectors will likely be glad it didn’t fade away with the retired VIDIYO theme.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen the LEGO Group re-use designs and elements that might otherwise have disappeared forever when VIDIYO was cancelled. LEGO Icons 10312 Jazz Club featured an element originally associated with VIDIYO, and 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale featured a recoloured version of a dragon’s head for a minifigure that first debuted in VIDIYO.
While LEGO VIDIYO might have died a disappointing death, getting retired entirely as a theme after less than two years on shelves, there’s perhaps an inspiring lesson here about never knowing when work will get recognised or when parts that might be thought defunct get a second lease of life. Who knows where we’ll see former LEGO VIDIYO elements appear next…
