The LEGO community is building around the latest BrickLink rule

The LEGO BrickLink Designer Program may not allow modular buildings now, but that hasn’t stopped the community from building around the rule.

Before the start of Series 6 the BrickLink team announced new guidelines for the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program, which most notably included a ban on buildings that were distinctly designed to fit with the official Modular Buildings Collection.

With the start of Series 6’s crowd vote stage, we’ve spotted a few buildings that appear to be designed around this new rule. Some buildings are more obviously designed with parts of the modular street in mind but have been removed just enough from the series to pass into this round.

Others are more obviously intended to be displayed on the modular street, including Bind-Design Factory Store by LegHo complete with everything aside from Technic pin connection points on the side. It even still has the white lamppost but with a modified design.

Some are even remakes of previous submissions that didn’t find success in other series, now modified to be far enough removed from the modular system to be eligible under the new guidelines. These include modified versions of The Art Factory by brickester, changing the street at the bottom to be built on its side rather than on a baseplate, but retaining almost everything else.

Northpoint School from KingCreations has also received a makeover with a wider base, a modified fence and a standalone street on the exterior that would not be compatible with the official collection without modification.

The community’s creativity is noticeable in Series 6, though the other guidelines that have been introduced are harder to build around, prohibiting models based on NINJAGODREAMZzzFriends and Monkie Kid as well as zoos, aquariums and other similar facilities.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Well, the Lego company shouldn’t be shying away from Modular inspired sets, it should embrace em! There’s clearly a kiloton of demand for Modular sets, and the format invites kilotons of creativity. Imagine having a Lego Modular apartment set, possibly with more than the three storeys that official Lego Modular buildings are limited to (it could be the first 4-6 storey modular) , or maybe a pocket neighborhood of tiny homes in a Lego Modular format. The Lego Modular format has also been successful for architectural styles that deviate from the 19th and 20th century Americana vibe that the original Lego Modular sets are based on, the most notable being the Chinese/Japanese/Korean style buildings that are great for exposing western Lego fans to other cultures right in their own homes and offices! as well as to give representation to Lego fans of the far east. I can also see the format working on Lego Modular buildings of Arabian/Middle Eastern styles, Southeast Asian architecture, the architectural styles of various European countries, even future extraterrestrial architecture people might one day build on other planets and moons!

the community will simply put the bldg series 6+ not modular sets on mils plates and connect them where they want. Lego made a mistake under estimating the creative power of the backers. they only force all the modular fans to convert to mils plates for compatability. more lego pieces for mils more profit for Lego.

Thanks for mentioning Northpoint Academy! With the revised guidelines, I was able to communicate with Bricklink to pass the modular rule, and all the changes allowed me to submit the model a 3rd time. I’m glad the modular rule didn’t end up being as restrictive as people initially feared!

I’m a huge fan of your Northpoint schools, Joshua, and have voted for every one of the versions. Congratulations on your Series 3 Camping Adventure, which will probably sell out within the day! I hope the success of that project will convince the Bricklink folks to give Northpoint Academy a spot in Series 6.
